Spate of Raccoon Sightings in Crown Heights

A Raccoon on the front steps of a Crown Heights home. Cellphone photo sent in by a reader.

Over the last few weeks CrownHeights.info has been alerted to many raccoon sightings around the neighborhood. Raccoons pose significant health risks to humans, ranging from rabies to strains of ringworm disease, which can be deadly.

If you spot a raccoon do not engage it, their behavior can be unpredictable and they may attack.

Call 311 and file a report with the Department of Health.

A good way to keep raccoons from hanging around your home is to secure garbage in its proper containers.

of course raccoons like crown heights. they know we won’t turn them into hats.

  • They love rats

Not so fast mice and rats are their favorite meal!

Ask people in Mill Basin that’s where they come from.

I think these were brought to NY to help get rid of the rats, so no use calling 311.

  • Don-t be silly not the fungus is deadly

It’s the rabies that is deadly.

  • You call that a raccoon?

The ones we have in MTL are the size of miniature horses….

If we don’t feed the rats we won’t need raccoons to get rid of them, we keep seeing challah and rolls out near the garbage, people might think they are feeding the birds, but food on the ground is an open invitation for the rats, the rats then rip the garbage bags and there’s more food on the ground.
So please take care of your garbage, use bins and clean up.
    Thank you.
