Photo Gallery: Early Kapparos on Eastern Parkway

Hundreds of Crown Heights residents flocked to the headquarters of the NCFJE on Eastern Parkway to take advantage of an early-bird special for Kapparos chickens – at the cost of only $5 each, where they were met by protesters from various ‘animal rights’ organizations.

The bases of Kaparos is a very intrinsic deep rooted mitzvah, something to be taken extremely serious, its a Mitzvah that honestly removes one sins that has been done the previous year,

in all honesty, it should be done as written, Erev Yom Kipper, the reason for it is known, as stated in Halacha and Kaballah,

The reason it is offered at this time, a day or two early, is,,, large crowds, to accommodate all,,,,,, B”H the community has grown and almost impossible to service everyone in one night, in order to entice families to come early, it is offered at a cheaper price. (or to ignite controversy to others, i’m not really sure)

However, definitely not the best way at all,

Interestingly, one may see many very well known wealthy families in the photos, Ones that even with 4-5…6-6 in all Kaporos at 15$ each,,, add up to maybe 100$ total……..I think you get my point,,,,, no need to elaborate on it,,,,,,,,

In my eyes,,, totally a personal perspective,,,, it cheapens the whole idea of this custom,, it bothers me how something so important,, despite many forget the bases of it,, and would argue, that its not completaeed the right way,,,

I dont blame others for protesting,,,,
My apologies if I sound anti,,,, but blogs are made for that

Nevertheless, I wish all and every, a true Gmar Chasimah Tova,,,

  • animal rights should be .......

animal rights should be caring more for peoples rights!
these animal rights people are nuts. have u ever tried speaking with them?

do you work for a bank? how do you know what money pepole have? just because you have keayboard does not make you smart, nor give you the write to speak about other pepole.

if you dont agree with us yore wrong. if thats how this thing works, and it does, no wonder everyone hates us.

  • Yossi

It is true that it is very important, but that is only one perspective, the Bais Yosef says it should be abolished as it is massei emori. (I do kaporos).

side fact u will never know who truly has money. and there is no resone to thowo out yidish gelt even for a mitzvah

  • CH Mom

To #1 you are very foolish!
    Looks are extremely deceiving!
I know many people who walk around with ripped shoes but have millions of dollars in their bank accounts. I also happen to know people who live like they are millionaires, but in reality they are borrowing non-stop because they don’t have a cent!

nice to see three people from all the pics that are wearing their hats and jackets for this ritual.
regarding holding the chicken by its wings, does it cause the animal discomfort? they seem pretty cool with it.
on the other, see how the Rebbe held the chicken, it seems with both hands.

i notice a famly not a well known weathy family pay 18$$ each gor the mitzvah so u never know how much ppl pay

I’m not against Kaparos but I own a bird and there are right and wrong ways to hold/handle them. I did see one gentleman handling the bird the correct way by cupping the bird in his hands–either he’s read up on it or he has the right instincts. I’d never dream of holding my parrot by his wings or picking up my cat with one hand under her tummy. All critters deserve kind treatment, even the ones that are eaten.

  • Shalom :)

So cute how they swing the Chickens then kill them so many dead chickens WOW! I wish I could be there to see this! Its such a big mitzvah and kidush hashem to do it just this way that it is done!! There is no other way to do this mitzvah that would make it any more Kosher!! B”H CH is crazy!! :) Go chickens!! Go Jews! And go CH!! Maybe next year before capores they should do betting on chicken fights! :)

  • Thank you, NCFJE!

And your partners in making Kapores affordable once again. I’m sorry I was there before the PETA cretins, I would have given them a piece of my mind.

  • sacrifice!!

i’m pretty sure u don’t get the story these chickens are going off in stead of us what do u think karbobos are (sacrifice) yes they are a sad thing to lose but people in the times of the beis hamikdosh brought 2 karbonos (sacrifice) every day its a big zchus to give up there lives to save a jews life

Remember that most of those animal rights groups are also PRO ARAB and they don’t mind if innocent Jewish children are slaughtered by Arab beasts, that’s ok, but don’t mis-treat a chicken! Everyone should ask them if they approve of the slaughter of innocent Israeli children and the slander of the Jewish religion, while protesting the chicken stuff…

  • harassment and trauma of children

The PETA pple were literally harrassing and traumatizing very young children.
They were going over to very very young children and screaming: your mother is cruel, she is teaching you to be cruel, you are doing something cruel, you are being mean, and then they screamed at the kids: “apologize to the chicken, apologize to the chicken!”
They should be banned from our neighborhood. A harassment lawsuit will be filed against them. There are many videos of them screaming at young, young children in this way.
    Simply terrible.
We do as our Rebbe did in terms of customs, not what these heartless people scream, rant and rave, and harass about.
The hatred on some of their faces was clearly seen.
May Hashem grant them a refuah sheleima.

  • Anyone here heard of tzar baalei chayim?

I’m with the animal rights protesters here. Not that I agree with all their policies, but the way kaporas is done these days is a massive chillul Hashem and a barbaric practice. The Rashba (Shailos U’Teshuvos HaRashba 1:395), the Ramban (Orchos Chaim, hilchos erev yom hakipurim 1) and the shulchan aruch (Orach Chaim 605:1) dissaprove of using chickens at all, saying it is the way of the Emorites. If you must use a bird, Look at the way the Rebbe held the chickens, with two hands carefully, that’s the way it’s done. This is no way to enter yom kippur, after having treated G-d’s creations like so.If we can’t have mercy on Hashem’s creature’s, how can we ask him for mercy on us? I will using alot of my hard earned money for kaporas this year and giving it to the poor, which I’m sure is better than holding a chicken by it’s wings nearly breaking them and putting it back in a cramped dirty crate.G’mar chasima tova
