Melbourne kicks off the Worldwide Lag BaOmer Celebrations
The Lag BaOmer parade and street fair in Melbourne, Australia, united thousands of men, women and children in the streets of Melbourne, on a day of Jewish unity and pride.
The event began with a fantastic circus show, followed by speeches given by politicians and dignitaries, including the Attorney General of Australia, Mark Dreyfus. The Attorney General spoke about how fortunate we are to live in a multicultural society like Australia, enabling the Jewish community to celebrate Lag B’Omer in such a Public manner.
A Rally then followed, with the 12 Pesukim recited by representatives from all Jewish day schools and youth groups from across Melbourne.
And then began… THE GREATEST PARADE EVER!!
A grand parade proceeded down one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares stopping traffic and drawing huge crowds! Marching, were people of all ages and stages, from very young playgroup kids, to the elderly from nearby nursing homes.
50 floats, built by Chabad students, numerous Chabad Houses, community groups and Jewish day schools were exhibited in a grand display of Jewish Pride. The floats overall theme was Ahavas Yisroel, and included stretch hummers, convertibles, bikes and beautifully creative floats in all shapes and sizes built by unbelievably talented Chabad youth.
The parade then continued around the corner and arrived at the street fair where thousands of people joined in the celebrations. Enjoying rides, food, market stalls, live music acts, and a grand circus finale!
It was truly a day of Jewish unity and pride, where Jewish boys and girls were able to march down the street, proud of their identity and heritage.
