Photos: Exotic and Bizarre Fruits for Tu Bishvat!
Names like Rambutans and Pepino Melons aren’t names of fruits you would hear as often as you would an Apple or Orange but on Tu Bishvat we search for a ‘new’ fruit so that we can make a ‘shehecheyanu’ blessing on it in honor of the day, celebrating the birthday of the trees.
Mr. Greens is offering these fruits to their customers in honor of Tu Bishvat. Shloime Klien of Mr. Greens explained to us what each fruit was, just click on the underlined names to read more about them.
Cherimoya, Buddha’s hand, Quiano Horned Melon, Gooseberry, Cactus Pears – also known as Sabras, Buxor, Carambola, Starfruit, Fresh Guava, Pepino Melon, Asian Pear, Passion Fruit, Mamey Sapote, Ugli Fruits, White Coconut, Rambutan, Kumquat

beautiful selection!

There’s no need to use the name of a foreign religious figure. “Buddha’s hand” is just a funny-shaped esrog; but a kosher one (because that’s its natural appearance — see mishneh sukkos 3:2 about “esrog hakushi”).

I don’t see any gooseberries in the pictures. I do see some cape gooseberries, which are an entirely different fruit, as different as grapefruit are from grapes, or pineapples from apples.

Are you sure these are all fruit?

For some of these ‘fruit’ the brocho is בורא פרי האדמה (Mellons), for many of the others it might be משנה הבריות, or אשר יצר…
Reminds me of people going crazy to get a ‘new fruit’ for Rosh Hashono, just to get unripe, tasteless, or other ‘fruit’ that one would not bring to their mouth unless forced to do so, instead of sticking to the time honored tradition that the Rebbe uses – a Fig (for Rosh Hashono, as it is totally out of season now).
For ט”ו בשבט probably Carob (באקסער), almonds, and other dried fruit for שבעת המינים such as figs, dates, and raisins will do!

Beautiful selection Mr. Greens! Thank you for keeping yomim tovim exciting for our families.

Milhouse #1: agreed, perhaps, about using the name of an avodah zarah figure, though I don’t know the relevant halachos. But no, in fact, this is highly doubtful to be a kosher esrog, not because of the color, but because of the shape (see Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch 648:28, about an esrog that has a completely unusual shape).
