Ambit to Refund Nearly $1 Million to New Yorkers

One of the state’s largest independent suppliers of electricity and gas for residential customers has agreed to refund nearly $1 million to resolve complaints about its billing practices.

From The Monitor:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that Texas-based Ambit Energy will issue $950,700 in refunds to 1,566 customers after an investigation by the state. About half of those customers live in central and eastern New York.

The state investigation began after complaints about Ambit’s customer disclosure statements and renewal notices, particularly for customers who were moved from a guaranteed-savings plan into a variable rate plan charging significantly more.

the question is, did those from Anash of were pitching this crap to fellow Anash, knew about the fact that this is a scam?

    • Pedant

And the answer is that, no, to the extent that it is a scam, the local Ambiter Gambiters have and had absolutely no idea.

I’ve been solicited by numerous able minded friends, and they had but the most tenuous grasp on Ambit’s own story as to what they do and how they operate. The energy market is a relatively complex beast and it’s not something you can get a good run down on in the local mikva, unless you know who to ask…and your Ambit handler wasn’t going to clue you in on it, if he or she had any handle on it themselves (the smart money is on that they do not). All the Ambit materials, whether for the potential consumer or the potential salesman or handler were marketing materials.

It was always all about blah blah blah, nothing changes for you except you get a lower bill and you can cancel any time!!! That’s all anybody ever needed to know about Ambit, including the sales people….

So no need to cast aspersions, nobody local knew or knows anything about them…

(My pet theory was that made their money on the franchisee pay-ins, who in large proportion (I’m assuming) paid their dues and never made a dime, and that that money offset whatever loss they incurred on having a hand in providing you an energy savings over con-ed)

  • Satisfied customer

I didn’t think it would be so, but about 2 years later I’m still satisfied with my lower bills.

  • So- are you saying that

Doing through ambit is bad and we should stop?

I’m signed up to it, I do remember being suspicious about a letter that came and described some sort of terms change I didnt like the sound of too much..

But tachlis: is it *definitely* a scam and ultimately not saving any money compared to straight up con ed, and thus it is advisable to unsubscribe from them?

Or is this just politics, but at the end of the day there are still savings compared to con ed?
