Get ready for the worst day of the heat wave.

After Monday’s high of 99 degrees, temperatures are expected to hit triple digits Tuesday, putting people and power systems at risk.

The record for the day – 101 degrees – could even bite the dust. And it will feel even warmer because humidity will spike after two thankfully drier days.

New Yorkers couldn’t imagine it getting any hotter.

As New York returns to work after the holiday weekend, Con Edison believes its record for peak energy use – set on a 97-degree day in 2006 – will shatter.

“We’re going to use more energy in the next couple of days than we’ve ever used before in New York City,” said Bob McGee, a spokesman for the utility.

Going into the third day of 90-plus heat, city residents were dreading the possibility of brownouts or even a blackout.

McGee said that if New Yorkers conserve where possible, the city should avoid widespread power failures – although there are likely to be mechanical problems.

“When we’re facing sustained heat like this in such a dense urban environment, with 90,000 miles of wires under the streets, we’ll get some burnouts,” he said.

To make sure it’s not worse, Con Ed is urging customers to setair conditioners for 78 degrees or above, unplug nonessential electronics and run appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines after 10 p.m.

Pardon me, but I am a MAN, and I walked around outside today with 4 layers: Undershirt, wool Tzitzis, white dress shirt, wool jacket and a hat.

Walking around in a hat and jacket is not even Halacha, it is a Lubavitch custom, and yet I do not think for a second to stroll around without it despite the 102 temperature outside, how much more so with regard to Tznius, which IS A HALACHA…

#3, not everyone is as healthy as you. Not every person is the same.

My point is, don’t judge others (male or female) or give them a hard time. Be nice. We’re dealing with unhealthy temperatures. I would rather have people be safe and comfortable than not.

here in the summer our normal temperature is around 110f/43c every day and you guys complain about 99F/37c?
    i just dont understand

    It’s crazy!
Even in the north it’s unbelievably hot.
And “australia” – let me help you understand:
We aren’t used to oven-temperatures, so give us a break.
    No hard feelings Aussie :)

  • yes I sweat but proud to be tznius!

to number 5 oh please, gimme a break. Anyone who is non tznius now in the scorching temp. is also non tznius when it is a lot cooler out. And dont try to tell me that adding 2 inches to your skirt so that it actually covers your knees is the make it or break it deal between cool and comfortable or just plain hot.

I dont judge people who dont dress tzniusly. I just think using the heat as your excuse is pathetic. and I completely agree with number three, the man. You guys have it alot worse then women who can wear a single layer.
