BROOKLYN, NY — Motor scooters — those cool Vespa-like mini-Harleys that put the buzz in so many European cities — aren’t just convenient, they’re also Zen.

“When you’re driving a scooter, you’re at one with Brooklyn,” said Chaim Seewald, owner of the new Downtown scooter store, ScootNY.

The six-week-old outlet features a lineup of motorized bicycles and scooters from four different brands (though none from the Italian giant Vespa). Seewald, a resident of Crown Heights, is touting their gas mileage (anywhere from 96 to 150 miles per gallon!) and their affordability (prices are $1,699 to $2,600).

Oh, and you can park it almost anywhere.

To Seewald, a scooter is the logical alternative to the subway, with its just-hiked fares.

“It’s cheaper [than a monthly pass] to actually finance one of our bikes,” said Seewald, “The more expensive the subway gets, the more ideal [having a scooter] is going to be.”

Since opening the store, Seewald says he has become more aware of Brooklyn’s community of scooter enthusiasts.

“It’s a lifestyle in a sense,” he said.

  • Lifestyle?

“It’s a lifestyle in a sense,” he said.

More like a “Death style” if you are hit by anything larger then a bicycle.

  • Enjoy, but be safe, especially now!

    Life is precious!
    Please wear a helmet!
Follow ALL traffic regs. that apply to cars (unlike a lot of the bicycle riders do)!
    Hatzlocha rabbah to Rabbi Seewald!
    Geulah now!!!

Is that number right? Googling for (718) 388-8090 gives a record shop in Willy …

  • Not good

this is a terrible idea. These things are death traps. There is a much, much higher rate of accidents and deaths with motorcycles/scooters than cars or buses. Personally, I’d rather sit in traffic and be safer than get on one of these things.

i don’t know how i found this site, i goggled scooters and found this. looks interesting. here’s my 2 cents, i own a scooter and would recommend it to anyone who works and needs to get around Brooklyn/NYC in a clean, efficient and practical way. i stick to the service lanes on the parkways and keep my helmet on at all times. in my opinion, riding your bike in those bike lanes with cars swerving in or out is a hell of alot more dangerous. anyway, enjoy your ride!

  • Richard, (Brooklyn Heights)

wishing Chaim the best, great family, and he’s a great guy. Only I’ve heard the term “organ donor machine” used together with motorcycles.
The Seewalds are very honest, so business with them should be a pleasure though. hatzlocha

“The home page is extremely un-tznius-dik!”

Nothing more revealing then kingston Ave on a summer afternoon.

Why is this not tznius company – fit for the news on the Crown Heights website? Do we have no more standards left?
