10-Year-Old Catches Fire from Magnifying Glass

During the summer, many children play with magnifying glasses, burning paper and cardboard using the sunlight, often not realizing the potential danger of this “fun.” But last week, one child caught fire and suffered second degree burns on his torso due to a magnifying glass.

From Yeshiva World News:

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday morning in a Yeshiva in Passaic, NJ, when one child aimed the glass at his friend’s shirt. The boy’s clothes instantly caught on fire. The victim, a 10-year-old boy, was transported by Passaic Hatzalah to a hospital, where he was being treated for second degree burns – thankfully only to a small area of his body.

Please use this incident as a warning; speak to your children about the dangers of playing with magnifying glasses, and explain to them that this is not any less dangerous than playing with matches.

“and explain to them that this is not any less dangerous than playing with matches.”

You’re kidding, right? Because there was ONE freak accident, makes it as dangerous as matches? Where is you sense of proportion?

A voice of reason in the cacophony of silliness that is the Jewish blogosphere.

What happens when one wears strong magnifying eyeglasses? Dangerous for the eyes and skin around the eyes?

  • The boy’s clothes instantly caught on fire?

Instantly? Maybe he had some flamable liquid on his shirt? It would be really unusual for a instant fire to be caused by a magnifying glass and spring sun.

I did that too when I was a kid but you had to be really careful; not because of the fire but if your parents caught you–then your backside got a good warming…LOL!
