Heartwarming: Facebook Post Draws Minyan for Elderly Man

A Facebook post brought an elderly man to tears today when over 100 people showed up to help fill a Minyan so that he can say Kaddish at his wife’s graveside on the day of her Yohrtzeit.

Working in Los Angeles Rafi Zoher received a photo from a friend showing his father sitting at the graveside of his mother Vivlah in Petach Tikvah. The message accompanying the photo was that his father has been waiting for a Minyan for hours.

Feeling helpless and far away Rafi posted the photo on Facebook with a plea for people to take 15 minutes of their time to help his father out.

The response was immediate and heartwarming and it brought Binyamin Zohar to tears.

Over 100 people showed up, well over the 10 he originally needed, and participated in the reciting of Kaddish.

Binyamin expressed shock at the turnout “I would have never believed it,” he said “last year at the Levaya we barely had a Minyan.” With tears in his eyes he then blessed all those who came out and helped, he told them how much he misses his beloved wife and that their showing up warmed his heart and made him feel less alone.

Though the real hero of the story was a woman named Yafit Mekonen, who shared Rafi’s original post which was then picked up by the Facebook page of PisPishuk, an online retailor with over 100,000 likes.
