Gadol Consulted over Avraham Fried’s Lyrics

Left: Reb Chaim Kanievsky. Right: Avraham Fried.

The lyrics of a recently released song by Chasidic superstar Avraham Fried have become the subject of internet buzz in recent days as word comes that the lyrics in question were actually brought to one of today’s foremost gedolim in order to ascertain their origin.

According to Israeli news source B’Chadrei Chareidim, a Bnei Brak school was planning on basing its end of year production on the words of the song Kach Es Sheli from Avraham Fried’s recently released Keep Climbing album. School officials questioned the source of the lyrics, which state that the third Bais Hamikdash will be built by the tears of Klal Yisroel, and elected to take their question to Reb Chaim Kanievsky, asking him if the lyrics were of midrashic origin.

While R’ Kanievsky responded that the words did not come from any midrash, he suggested that perhaps they were brought out by some other individual.

In an effort to shed light on the matter, VIN News reached out to Fried to find out more about Kach Es Sheli, which was composed by, and features the lyrics of, Yuval Stoppel and was originally recorded by Israeli singer Yisroel Parnes.

In fact, the lyrics are based on the words of the Chasam Sofer as quoted in Sefer Ohel Moshe, according to Fried.

“A friend of mine sent me a quote in the name of the Chasam Sofer, where he writes that every tear we shed helps build the Bais Hamikdosh,” Fried told VIN News.

Ohel Moshe brings down a question in the name of the Chasam Sofer asking if all the tears that have been shed over the Churban Bais Hamikdash over the past 2000 years have been wasted, given that we are still waiting for the coming of Moshiach. The Chasam Sofer replies that although we know that the third Bais Hamikdash will be constructed out of fire and will descend from the heavens, it is our tears that create each and every stone of the celestial Bais Hamikdash, so clearly the tears that have been shed over the last 2000 years have not gone to waste.

Additionally, Fried pointed to another source that brings out the concept of our tears being the literal building blocks of the Bais Hamikdash.

“There is also a quote in the same Sefer from the Shla Hakadosh who writes that the reason that we push Tisha B’Av off to Sunday if it falls out on Shabbos is because it is our tears that build the Mikdosh. Since Tisha B’Av is a time for tears and the melacha of building (boneh) is forbidden on Shabbos, Tisha B’Av cannot be observed on Shabbos because the tears that we shed are the literal building blocks of the Bais Hamikdash,” explained Fried.

title – nisht altz vos men tracht, darft men zogen
Have a little respect for someone who is a lot more learned than you.

  • Esther

Your title of the article is disrespectful to say the least to Reb Chaim Kanievsky shlita

  • Chosid

When you publish a headline like that, I can understand why the rest of the velt has yearnings of “dislike” towards Lubavitch. I use the word “dislike” very loosely.

  • Change the heading

The heading of this article should be changed to something more appropriate as it gives the wrong impression.

  • shlomo as always with bad English

at least put link o YouTube , to knew what about…

  • Reb Chaim Shlit a is correct

He was asked if it has a source in Midrash and he said it is not found in a Midrash! The fact that it is in Chasam Sofer and Sheloh does not make it a Midrash!

  • Have you no shame!

This article is wholly inappropriate. In my opinion, it should be removed ASAP

  • Shtyger

Even our singers and entertainers can learn more than their learners.

Future headline: Mendy Pelin shlogs op shiyur of Rav Shteinman.

Wow the first 5 of you dont get it,I am so amazed at the weakness of our own in recent days. First of all weakness number one, begging for an invite to an internet meeting which those in the know it was already a loser. Besides we use internet for the positive.
Second is your not understanding the slight of the so called gadol, whom do you think he wasreferring to when he said that the words might be from an individual.
The third weakness will be this summer when you all run to the siyum……No pride…

But doe he even know how to read Gemore?

  • Amazing!

    BS”D
Don’t even ASK about Rav kavnievskys ideas! He makes a siyum KOL HATORAH KULAH every YEAR, and does 7 blatt BAVLI AND YERUSHALMI every DAY!
This man is amazing, and the Rebbe would be very very pleased with the Nachas Ruach he brings, we are all pleased, “veatem hadveikim el Hashem elokeicheim chayim kulchem hayoim”
    Amazing!

  • i don-t know?

am i reading this wrong, or dose say nothing bad about the gadol?
i dont think this was put on to make fun of anyone, there was a question, it was asked to someone who would know,he answered correctly, its not a medrish, and R’ avrohom cleared the source!!

what are all of your problems?!?!?!??!?!?!

  • To #11

Yes he (Avarohom Fried) can learn!!! as can basically anyone who went to a Lubavitcher Yeshivah!

And just to let it out there his family is pretty smart, his brother is Rabbi Manis Friedman and just b/c Avremel sings doesntean he doesn’t know how to learn!

The implications of this article are total chutzpah, despicable and the antithesis of kovod haTorah. I’m disgusted that this is what our chassidus amounts to.

  • Zoltan

I dont understand the problem right now can somebody explain? If its not from the midrash what does it mean? is it mean its wrong? or bad? or just simply is not from the midrash.
Or the problem is AF used this lyrics?

I dont see any problem with the lyrics of the song, Shla Hakadosh explanation is very good so.

Nice song, Avremel is a great guy, Reb Chaim Kanievsky is A Gadol!

    Shabbat shalom from hungary

  • Zoltan

    Scott you mean Avremel?
“…But doe he even know how to read Gemore?”

I think he did more with his singing to bring mosiach than lot of talmud chochem, and if you know his songs you would not comment like this.

But its always good to read some Chofetz Chayim…

  • Scott

Zoltan — you are the ultimate am hooretz who does not know that Talmud Torah Keneged Kulam.

It’s nice to add some sugar with songs, but the meat and potatoes of real Judaism is the Talmud and not some inspirational songs.

  • Scott

    to #14

    Oh yes…
How many students of Lubavitch Yeshiva know how to learn Gemore?

And the fact that his brother is smart is real proof!

  • anon

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the title and yes, Avraham Fried can learn, probably better than most people his age in Lubavitch.

  • umm...

@11: I know another Scott who likes to bash people he’s never met, about things he has no evidence for or against, but he usually goes by “Shmarya” online. v’D“L.

@16: While I agree that respect must be shown to all talmidei chachamim, saying that ”this is what our chassidus amounts to” shows that you probably could stand to learn a little more chassidus.

    TO #13 and #19

The original title of this article was the problem.
Something to the effect of: Litvish Gadol Enlightened by Avraham Fried.

The title has rightfully been changed to not be so disrespectful as now being “Gadol Consulted over Avraham Fried’s Lyrics”.

Glad that it was cleared up, even though my earlier comment was refused to be included.

  • CR

It sounds like someone seriously wasted Rav Kanievski’s time with this matter. As a Litvish Godol, the Rav is expected to have photographic familiarity with ChaZaL and the more “Yeshivish” works primarily and, perhaps, less so the works of German or Hungarian tradition like the Chasam Sofer. Clearly, in this story, he knows all Midrashim and could say, authoritatively, that the quoted passage did not come from there. That he is less familiar with the C“T’s works, who does not stem from Hornsteipel like R”K’s family, is not a “G’nus” by any stretch.

There is a certain undercurrent in this article of how Avremele Fried somehow “schooled” the Rav. That assertion is a bit unseemly, I think, changed headline or not.

  • Zoltan

Scot: such a comment like this without knowing me “Zoltan — you are the ultimate am hooretz who does not know that Talmud Torah Keneged Kulam.”

It clearly shows you can learn talmud at your whole life but you still dont get the REAL THING. between two daf ha yomi you should sit down read some Chofetz Chayim, because you can be the biggest talmud choechem if you do loson horo like this you destroy everything.

I wish to you happy holidays and joyfull Savuot.

    CHazak!
