Ukrainian Peasants Beat Chasidim in Mezhibuzh

Two Chasidim spending Shabbos in Mezhibuzh, near the Ohel of the Bal Shem Tov, were chased by seven Ukrainian thugs, who emerged from a local pub screaming “Jews stink” and other hateful epithets at them. The attackers then caught them and they were beaten considerably.

The victims were part of a group of some 80 Boyaner Chassidim on their way to the city of Chernovitz, the resting place of Rabbi Yisroel of Ruzhin, for his Yahrtzeit today, 3 Cheshvon.

While the event was frightening and painful, the Chasidim decided they would not permit the thugs to ruin the spiritually uplifting Shabbos, and they carried on with their planned schedule.

The ohel in Mezhibuzh remains one of the single ugliest kvarim in Europe. It clashes with the local aesthetics and is garish in its use of marble and neon lights.
