Crown Heights, Catskills Lose Power Over Shabbos

Throughout Friday and Shabbos parts of Crown Heights and towns in the Catskill mountains were left without electricity due to high load on the power grid, forcing residents to take refuge in Shuls and be neighbors for Shabbos meals and some air conditioning relief.

In Crown Heights only one block suffered a prolonged outage, Montgomery between New York and Brooklyn, where the power went out Friday night and remained off into Motzai Shabbos. Curiously only parts of the block remained without power and neighbors invited those without power in for the meal and to stay the night.

ConEd told residents that they were repairing an underground regulator that was malfunctioning preemptively. The repair crew said that should it have failed a number of blocks would have been stuck without power for days.

In the Catskills, NYseg customers in the town of South Fallsburg and neighboring Fallsburg experienced intermitted outages throughout Friday, all customer were without power for a number of hours from 8:00pm when Shabbos started until 10:00pm.

Neighboring towns Loch Sheldrake and Monticello did not experience any outages.

By Sunday NYseg reported that all their customers have had their electricity restored. In Brooklyn some neighborhoods are still not getting full voltage.

AC takes up massive amounts of electricity.
i keep my central air on minimum and use fans to circulate the cool air.
combo of both keeps costs down.
also i keep blinds down on windows where the suns heat penetrate.
    helps.
