Hurricane Matthew Sets Eye on Florida

The eye of Hurricane Matthew has moved off the northeastern coast of Cuba and forecasters have expanded the hurricane warning area in south Florida, where it is expected to hug the coast on Thursday and Friday.

Hurricane Matthew has maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, and is traveling very slowly northward – about 8 mph.

Government officials are worried about complacency, especially in South Florida, which hasn’t seen a major hurricane in 11 years.

In Miami-Dade County, the state’s largest school district, school has been cancelled on Thursday and Friday, and supermarkets have empty shelves as residents scramble to stock up on water, bread, batteries and other essentials.
