Unhappy News, Skimmer Discovered In Crown Heights Store

In an unhappy turn of events, with a silver lining, Crown Heights Shomrim has released an alert to the community reporting that another card skimmer was discovered in Crown Heights. The silver lining? It was caught quickly.

“These subjects are wanted for installing a skimming device in a local supermarket,” Crown Heights Shomrim wrote on social media. “The device was detected very early on b”h. Shomrim will be working with NYPD detectives on this matter.”

Thanks to extensive efforts, Crown Heights stores have been on high alert for these skimmers, and were able to quickly identify and remove the device before it caused harm.

Skimmers are able to capture and store the data and PIN numbers of any card put through the credit card slot, allowing bad actors to sell the information to criminals who duplicate the cards and steal the money.

A previous rash of EBT card thefts hit Crown Heights last year, and through a collaborative effort was brought under control. The fact that these skimmers are back is not welcome news.
