Fire, Accident, Intoxes and Arrests over Yom Tov

Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah brought about the usual dose of Bochurim and Yungerlite saying too much lechaim. This year it came along with a fast moving fire in a Jewish home, with led to the arrest of one Yid, a Bochur who got hit by a car and was injured, and a few other arrests.

A source in Hatzalah said that this year was relatively tame compared with last year. Hatzalah transported about a dozen patients to Kings County Hospital, and another dozed or so were taken home, and released in to the care of their families.

Last year Hatzalah handled over 70 transports to the hospital.

Shmini Atzeres Sept. 30th

A fire broke out in a Jewish home on Crown Street on the corner of Schenectady Avenue, and one person denied the firefighters entrance to the burning home without the owners presence and he was arrested.

The fire was put out a short while later with no reported injuries.

In another incident an intoxicated Bochur was struck by a car in front of Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown and Albany. The vehicle did not flee the scene.

Hatzalah responded and treated the Bochur, who was bleeding from scrapes and bruises and was held overnight in the hospital, B”H his injuries were minor.

Also, a fire in Flatbush claimed the life of an 8 year old boy, Click Here to read that story.

Simchas Torah Oct. 1st

Witnesses said that they observed a Bochur getting handcuffed on Kingston Avenue, and there were no further details available.

Shabbos Oct. 2nd

Two Bochurim were arrested after they threw a chair of a roof of a house, it was not clear if it hit anyone, they were charged with reckless endangerment.

I asked you MANY times to report on this drinking binge. You have REFUSED . Now I hope you will have the guts to condem this crazy behvior. Stop ALL vodka at once.

  • WITNESS!!!

the bochur that got hit may have been drunk (he was deffinatly not that drunk and realized what was going on), but I was there on the scene and the car was speeding so fast that when is hit the bochur it dounded like the car hit another car. The driver should definitely get some sort of fine!

  • Moshe Vogel

I was the first EMT on the scene in front of Lubavitcher Yeshiva. THE CAR WAS NOT SPEEDING EXECIVELY. The Bochur was NOT DRUNK. (He was a bit tipsy.) He should be careful trying to sue, cuz his daddy can end up in jail for allowing the drinking of his child that is a minor. It will probably also open up all sorts of other issues, with the cops being on the alert next year for minors drinking. (Which is against the Law, and against what OUR Rebbe allows. Maybe then, it is a good thing.) In fact at the scene, one of the cops said to me, that he understands parties, and enjoys them too, but this is downright wrong,,

    Typical CrownHeights.Info

How about all the Chayus, warmth and excitement coming fro 770?
The Hachnosas Orchim, Sharing and genuine Ahavas Yisorel that went on?

Please, Lets have some positive reporting.

    The cup is half full.

get a life this is simchas torah things happen its not the vodka its the bochurim who don’t listen to the rebbes’ gezara…

  • Healthcare provider

I hope we can define simchas yomtov at this point, and being observed (or worse) in a hospital is not it. Alcohol is defined as ‘poison’, and when one needs it to ‘get into the mood’, well, I don’t want to be the one treating you.

  • WITNESS!!! #2

    I was there as well.
    Are you crazy???

1-The Bochur can not sue, he ran into oncoming traffic with out looking—who said he was so drunk, he did not look when he ran JWALKED the corner

    2. I DO agree that the car was going quick (trying to get the yellow) however its totally the Bochur’s fault. he ran across, jwalked with out looking,

  • to moshe vogel!

you may have been the first EMT on sight to deal with the situation once it happened NOT while it was happening!
I saw the car speeding and heard the bang!

  • observer

Thank you hatzolah for giving up your entire 3 days of yom tov running around non stop, taking care of all the extra volume, to stand around and treat people in front of 770 all night simchas torah was truly an amazing sight

  • A sad member of our shchuna

I rounded the corner to my block and saw flashing lights in front of my parents house. My heart flew into my Kishkes, as I knew that my mom was the only one home. Holding on to my kids as fast as we could we ran up to the ambulance, I could see the white shirts of the hatzolah guys working in the back. I asked what was going on? Is my mom ok?? My neighbor quickly calmed me down, as he explained, a young shnuk of 17 was being transported for being intoxicated. My reaction was anger. There were three hatzolah members, all part of families, that should have been enjoying Simchas Torah with their families, and friends, just like this stupid irresponsible boy, with his equally as stupid friends who were laughing outside the ambulance. How selfish can one person be?? Aside from the fact, that our Rebbe was extremely clear that this behavior is NOT acceptable, what about the chillul Lubavitch that Hatzolah has to bring in TWO extra ambulances for simchas torah? Dont you think that makes us the laughingstock of otherwise ehrliche yidden?? I know that I would laugh if it was not so sad. The hatzolah members are not entitled to having yom tov because of the selfishness, and stupidity of idiots that think they should drink themselves into oblivion?? OY REBBE,, we need you!

  • Everyone take it easy!

    1. He wasn’t at all drunk… he was on the way back from Mikvah
    2. He wasn’t in hospital overnight… he was out a few hours later
    3. He’s joking about suing… he knows it was it was his fault

…..so everybody just calm down and find something productive to do with your time!!

  • curious

I saw a bochur collapse infront of 70 and was taken away by hatzala, does anyone know what happened to him?

  • Pure Comparative Fault in New York

If the factual accounts expressed on this site and its comments from “witnesses” are accurate, it sounds like there is fault on the part of the driver as well as the bochur. New York is a pure comparative negligence state, which means the law may allow the bochur (if he has suffered what the law considers “serious injury”) to recover for his damages, but his recovery would be reduced based on the percentage of his fault and the percentage of the driver’s fault. For example, if the damages were found to be $100,000, and the bochur were found to be 75% at fault and the driver 25% at fault, the bochur would recover only 25% of $100,000, which is $25,000. Even if the bochur was impaired or was not careful, had the driver been as careful as the law requires the accident may not have happened. The driver was not supposed to speed (not even a little bit) and was supposed to slow down at a yellow light to come to a stop at the red light. Speeding up at a yellow light to beat the red light is a clear “no no.” Why shouldn’t the bochur sue? His face is full of stitches and it sounds clearly like the driver shared in the fault.

  • Parent of boys

I am a parent of a few bochurim and have strong opinions about drinking. I feel it’s utmost importance to be careful, and EDUCATE your children on the balance of being freilach, enjoying simchas yom tov, and going overboard, bordering on danger or beyond.
Don’t bury your had in the sand – Boys WILL DRINK, even when they are not into it, they are pushed by adults and peers, teach them the facts, how to do it safely (timing, adding food) and that if/when they do, besides the chasidishkeit of if, and the safety aspect, remain in a safe environment – stay in shul or yeshiva, and with others people so you can monitor each other.
Peer “pressure” can be used for the positive – let’s do this together, and let’s do it right. we (bochurim) can help each other drink responsibly

  • parent of boys - to add

A point I must add to the previous post:

    Why so much negativity?
There will be drinking, but there was so much dancing, so much good farbrenging, and nachas to be had, orchim, etc

why only report on the (relatively small amount) bad things that went on around town

Where is the balance of the beauty of the yom tov?!?

  • To #10

About sueing, maybe you should tell ALL those who walk out into oncoming cars (drunk or not) that it is their fault.

We are now being sued by one of those bochurim who decide to do just that this summer and caused extensive damage to our car, not to mention the emotional damage, just ’cause he couldn’t be bothered to go to the corner. Now he thinks he can sue US for HIS damages…

  • chaim36

TO # 7 : You missed the point. Many shules in N.Y.C. ban liquor on any occassion. Too many youngsters have gotten sick and near death from this drinking. I myself have seen it here and in Miami during Chabad Chanukah floats.

    Chilul Lubavitch

skipping Tefilos due to bieng shiker

    saying and doing obscene things

Next year lets hope the normal people give out the Mashke in a normal fashion

  • the sensible one

for all the people who think he cant sue how about you get hit by a car and see if you want a little payback

  • Heard on the grapevine...

The new Rov is planning to ban all mashkeh in line with the Rebbe’s gezerah.

  • TO #14

    you quote:
just like this stupid irresponsible boy, with his equally as stupid friends who were laughing outside the ambulance. How selfish can one person be??

I was on the scene and I saw his friends crying and saying Tehilim together. I do NOT call that laughing or being stupid!
Get your facts right and don’t start putting others down or get angry b/c YOU ASSUMED!!!

  • to # 28

I am talking about the incident that took place on Thursday night on the corner of Albany and Crown St.

  • to 26

I was on the scene and saw it all happen. I would like to know how the bochur is doing?

  • To all those who were not there

It happened right outside my window. I feel that both were at fault. The sound that the car made on impact was only because the guy was speeding. So many people speed coming down crown and coming down albany. We need speed bumps on crown st. We have children walking to schools and people don’t care, as long as they make that light. I feel bad for the kid, I know him and he is a great kid.

  • fire

about that fire…not true, the firemen were in the house and contained the fire even before the owners were home, the arrest was nonsense, we were there, what you report here is incorrect about why there was an arrest…

  • to Mr. Vogel

If you were the first EMT on scene to care for the injured boy as you claim. Then A) you were there after the incident occurred and have know way of knowing for sure how fast the vehicle was travelling. I assume that even if you were there when it happened you don’t walk around with a radar gun, and wouldn’t be able to accurately estimate the vehicle speed in either case.

And B) as a medical provider you should well versed in matters of patient confidentiality and the HIPPA laws which forbid you discussing any patient details, including his level of intoxication if any with anyone not directly involved in that patients care.

And finally C) and this goes for everyone sitting here writing comments about this and that, asking what happened to this guy taken from here, etc.

CAN’T WE ALL JUST RESPECT PEOPLES PRIVACY *JUST A LITTLE* ESPECIALLY WHEN ARE VULNERABLE AND NEED OF EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE??!!

Why when there is an ambulance in front of 770 treating a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle are there close to a hundred people standing around just staring at ‘the action’?? Be mature once in while and look the other way. How would you feel if you were hurt, being examined (perhaps only partially dressed) in an ambulance and people are jumping up trying to catch a glimpse of ‘the action’ through the window??
