An arrest has been made by the NYPD after two Lubavitchers were run over in Crown Heights by a man driving a large pickup truck last Friday night. The truck had fled the scene and the arrest made possible thanks to Crown Heights Shomrim.
“Thanks to relentless work by our volunteers in collaboration with the leadership and detective squad of the @NYPD71PCT an arrest was made regarding the brutal hit and run that occurred on Rutland and Troy this past Friday night,” Crown Heights Shomrim wrote in an update to the community.
As previously reported by CrownHeights.info, the two Lubavitch men had been crossing at the intersection of Troy Ave and Rutland Road around 7:00pm Friday night when they were struck by a pickup truck making the left turn from Rutland to Troy. The truck sped off after striking the two men.
A witness to the incident stated that the victims had been in the crosswalk when the driver sped through the stop sign and turned directly into them. The two were hit and thrown before the driver backed up and fled the scene.
Hatzalah rushed to the scene and the two victims were transported to the hospital.
According to those familiar with the incident, Crown Heights Shomrim had gone into action following the incident and were able to provide vital footage to the NYPD of the vehicle that struck the two Lubavitchers.
Thanks to that footage and witness testimony, the NYPD was able to find and impound the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was later placed under arrest.
