Two NYPD Officers Shot In Crown Heights

Crown Heights, Brooklyn — Two New York City Police officers were shot early Monday morning during a routine traffic stop in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Officer Russell Timoshenko, 23, was shot in the face and neck and is in extremely critical condition.

An officer at the hospital said, “It would be a miracle if he survives.”

Residents note: Many streets are currently closed to vehicular traffic around the area.

Hospital officials described his condition as “touch and go.”

Officer Herman Yan, 26, was shot in the chest and left forearm, and is listed in serious condition. His bulletproof vest might have saved him.

At a news conference, Kelly held up the bulletproof vest, which clearly showed a bullet hole in the center of the vest.

“Two partners who set out this midnight to keep us safe were shot while helping deliver the ever-lower crime rate that makes life as we know it in New York possible. One will recover. The other is clinging to life. Every one of us who lives, visits or works in New York should be grateful for their sacrifice, and I ask all New Yorkers to pray for their recovery,” said Bloomberg.

Sources tell CBS 2 News that at around 2:30 a.m. officers from the 71st Precinct pulled over a BMW X5 at Lefferts Avenue and Rogers Avenue, after noting that the plates on the SUV did not match the vehicle registration.

The officers signaled driver to pull over to right side of street, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. The officers approached the car from both the driver’s and passenger’s sides.

As they approached, one of more persons inside the SUV opened fire.

“There was no exchange of words. They had not gotten to driver’s side or passenger side window when shots rang out,” Kelly said.

At least one of the officers returned fire and was able to call for backup on his radio.

Detectives in the area heard the shots and sped to the scene.

The wounded officers were taken to Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn.

Police located the abandoned SUV four blocks away from the scene of the shooting at Kingston and Lefferts avenues.

Investigators recovered two .45-caliber shell casings from inside the vehicle. They found two additional shell casing at the scene of the shooting.

“The terrible events of this morning are proof again of a fundamental truth we have learned again and again: Guns when they fall into the hands of the wrong people have tragic consequences,” Bloomberg said.

Police helicopters searched from the sky as dozens of officers joined the ground search for suspects in the shooting.

Kelly visited the crime scene shortly after 5 a.m., and went to the hospital shortly after. He and Mayor Bloomberg met with family members at the hospital at around 5:30 a.m.

The Officers are both are assigned to the 71st Precinct.

CBS 2 News has learned that both officers have been on the job for less than two years.

One of the officers was at the precinct for less than six months.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call 1-800-577-TIPS or the Cop Shot Hotline at 1-800-COP-SHOT

Police officers are apparently investigating everyone in the area with an outstanding warrant. They came to my house looking for someone who never lived there, but gave this address. They said that one of the police officers had died.

When are the Police going to do something about the very real and serious gun problem we have in crown heights. How many shootings do we have to endure (two in two days now) until the police move to crack down on this in Crown Heights?

I pray for the officers full recoveries, but something needs to be done. Maybe a special task force, I don’t know. We are in the midst of a growing threat and we must beg the cops to do something before we have some fatalities from unserer.

These poor people have nothing to do all summer so they steal cars and get violent. The city has to do more to provide these guys with suitable recreation, like breaking rocks on Rikers Island and participating in chain gangs to keep the streets clean and the pavement smooth. Also, these punks should get justice meted out to them street style by cops out for revengs, instead of sitting a por schvartz yor’n in prison (barely ein schvartz yohr with time off for good behavior that they get for making nice brass knuckles in the metalwork shop) after some lefty judge gives them a break.

Meanwhile, I hope the cops have a full recovery, though I know the situation is grave.

  • o.t. bahchur who cant spell

KELLLY AND BLOOMBERG should push the lefty judges, 4 hard time ,the thugs are all repeat offenders which know the in`s and out`s of the crupt systym .and the cops should respect us jews 4 not being killers ,like there oun kind.

This is what it has finally come to!! I was just sitting and waiting for a police officer to be shot, which now ,unfortunately may… and I say may very “tongue in cheek, wake up our MAYOR!!! When Rudy baby was Mayor we feared the police.. Rudy allowed them to be tough and supported their every action.. Mayor Bloomberg GET TOUGH and be behind your MEN IN BLUE!!! I only hope that they match the bullets from this shooting to the scum who killed Efraim Klein HY”D. That’s the only way to find his killer, & for sure no effort will be spared to find these shooters.

I said Kapital Chof for the officers. It felt a bit weird (no Yiddishe names), but hey, a person is a person, even if they’re goyim. It’s creepy to see so many cops here…the last time we had a lot of cops was during the riots. Freaky.

Unbelievable is all I have to say. These two fine officers conducted a typical car stop and two heartless animals opened fire upon them. Cowards! They will be caught and justice will be served. Officer Yan is a hero; protecting and staying with his partner. Hey Dumberg, wake up! Police Officers need a raise and this act of bravery highlights the need.

Can you please provide everybody over here with the father’s name? This is how we can remember them in prayer (and BTW maybe let some news media know about the communal prayer taking place in CH for the officers?

but hey, a person is a person, even if they’re goyim.

The Rebbe was very much mechabed our police officers. Whatever the politics and inefficiencies in the 71st Precinct, most cops are sincere and hardworking people who put their lives on the line for us, and really don’t get much pay or respect for what they do.

I pray for the Officers and their families and all those innocents in CH. I also wish that these savages when caught are handed out street justice and not have some left-wing scum lawyer defend them. They are vermin and vermin needs to be exterminated!

why don’t police crack down on the gun sellers and not just the gun buyers

  • BetterMayorNeeded

    To “crownheightser”:

The other guy Bloomberg ran against was also a Jew. Like someone said during the elections, “We have two idiots running, and we have to vote for the better one.”
