Bizarre Break-in, Man Released After Smashing Minivan Window

This was a car break-in the likes of which Shomrim never experienced before. A man was apprehended after smashing the window of a minivan, only police later discovered that he had the owner’s permission to do so.

At around 11:30pm Shomrim received a call on their hotline alerting them to a man acting suspiciously and attempting to break into a minivan parked on East New York Avenue.

Nearly a dozen Shomrim volunteers responded to the call and located the suspect, who was pacing back and forth near Albany Avenue, and repeatedly attempting to gain entry into the parked vehicle.

Sensing something was up, Shomrim maintained a distance while keeping an eye on the man waiting for him to commit a crime. Then he did, by smashing one of the windows on the minivan then crawling in. Shomrim did not approach, instead calling 911 and within mere moments a number of police officers arrived on scene and took the man into custody.

“We noticed that the man wanted to gain entry into the vehicle but he was not acting in the manner most criminals usually do” a Shomrim coordinator told CrownHeights.info, adding “our extra caution paid off.”

In police custody the man said that he had permission to break into the car and upon investigating the man’s claims, police got in touch with the vehicles owner and were able to corroborate his story.

“This was a very strange incident but out caution lead to a positive outcome and a peaceful resolution” said the Shomrim coordinator, adding that police thanked them for their alertness and professionalism.
