Brazen Armed Mugging in the Heart of Crown Heights

Crown Heights [CHI] — A Jewish girl was mugged by an unidentified assailant in the heart of crown heights.

The incident occurred at around 9:15 PM on Montgomery St. between Kingston and Albany Ave. A girl was returning home with a laptop in her hand; unbeknown to her, she was being followed by an armed assailant who intended to make off with her valuables.

As the girl was about to enter her home from the side door, the perp came into the driveway between the two homes and tried to wrest the laptop from the girl’s hands, breaking her finger in the process.

A passing young man heard her screams and immediately ran to her defense. The bochur approached and tackled the assailant to the ground, but the perp drew out a pistol and hit the young man in the mouth. The perp then fled the scene, leaving the laptop – and his skateboard – behind him.

Witnesses described the perpetrator as a teenaged African-American male, approximately six feet tall, wearing dark clothes and a “hoodie” sweatshirt with lettering on the back. He was last seen fleeing down Albany Ave. toward Empire blvd.

Hatzalah arrived at the scene and took the girl to the hospital.

If you have any information that will assist in apprehending the mugger, please immediately contact 911 or Shomrim at (718) 774-3333.

  • Chaptzem!!

Fingerprints? Identification on his skateboard? After all, he wouldn’t want that valuable piece of equipment to be stolen by some thug, now would he?

  • Chaim

I saw the guy running off.. I feel bad for the yidden who were hurt in the process. This is how these people celebrate their Holiday.. Sick sick person

  • shes stupid

in all honesty, she was kind of asking for the mugging when walking around with the laptop in hand.it was a very stupid thing to do

  • ed baumann

Welcome to America, land of the FREEmasoned, home of the depraved. Where did THE LORD ever say all men are equal, should do and say anything they wish, and should worship any god they wish? That load of crap got the peeps hammered for thousands of years!

  • Blame the victim

#3 is 100% right. You should never carry anything in the street lest you tempt those poor robbers. In fact, girls should stay off the street altogether so as not to tempt……

  • a crown heights resident

#3 – look at you! Blaming the Victim! If it happened to you or your daughter/sister/mother/grandmother I’m sure you would be quite upset.

  • answering #3 & #7

Are you kidding?! 1st of all, CH is smack in the middle of “the projects” so yes, we shouldn’t be walking around with valuable things. But from her driveway to her house does not include that! She was HOME! SHAME ON YOU FOR BLAMING HER, you should be ashamed of yourselves! The poor girl broke fingers because the worthless cops in this community failed to take yet another thief off our streets. What if that happened to you? Or a loved one? We are a community, act like one.

  • Parent

#7 was being sarcastic. But we do have to disguise valuables. That’s the sick world we live in.

  • Twisted

#3 &#7 I hope you get mugged and will see how it feels. Are we not supposed to carry our belongings with us anymore? We should probably just live in fear and lock our doors and stay inside all day as well. You guys are crazy, you have to live your life!! while we are on the subject, get a life! How dear you blame her?! shes a brave girl for yelling. She could have been raped or worse Chas Veshalom. You should beg for her forgiveness.
May we merit the speedy redemption in our times! Moshiach Now!!!

  • Suspicious character

If the hoodie was red I saw him on that block, loitering and looking suspicious. As he came near me I glared at him and he ambled away into the courtyard of the building on the corner of montgomery and albany (betw kingston and albany). If that bldg has a camera it may have caught him.

  • You REALLY want Moshiach?

#13 on the one hand you ask for Moshiach but on the other you curse out a Yid & wish him/her harm.

Is this normal? Well, maybe for the sickos amongst us it is. I wish you’d all stop parroting the “Moshiach Now!” rhetoric. You don’t mean a single word, it’s just part of your davenning, like Yechi. Means nothing.

  • ghost

Saw the police chasing him down my block
    This place is crazy
To number 7 mybe us women should get of the street alltogether and lock ourselves in our homes
It is the securatiy that as to change in this place

  • live in fear?

a person should not have to live in fear nust because there are low lives, instead everyone just has to be more vigilant, male or female, it could have happened to anyone,

checking cams in the area may not be a bad thing. there are stored on albany that he passed, maybe his face is on there.

he did not look african american. he looked more like a caucasian, tall, thin, dark hoodie

  • Ari

For all those that haven’t realized, number 7 was being sarcastic. However, we should all be more careful these days when they need gifts or money for gifts for their holidays.

  • Hashem Yishmorcha mikol ra.

I was the guy that grabbed him, and I just want to say that the above comments, the pure Sinas Chinam and aggression is totally uncalled for. #13 “twisted” has got the whole idea of Judaism wrong; when we stand united and help each other (and not curse each other out or wish each other bad) we are able to overcome the greatest of adversities. Tonight was x-mas and Chanukah, but Yidden stood together, and an innocent girl was not robbed or chas v’shalom worse….

  • Self Defense

Start a self defense class for women. Karate – anything is soooo important!! If the cops can’t help, we have to be proactive!

  • Witness

“Witnesses described the perpetrator as a teenaged African-American male, approximately six feet tall, wearing dark clothes and a “hoodie” sweatshirt with lettering on the back”

Very helpful description! I saw 6 of him walking together down Nostrand Ave today…

  • SHAME ON YOU, #13

To wish bad upon a fellow yid? Your brother?
Uch. Even with stuff like this, MOSHIACH NOW!!

  • moshe eliyahu

2 all it is advised 2 carry those kind of things in a colored plastic bag I.e. judaica world bag or anything that has nothing 2 do with what’s inside so if ur carryin a laptop in ch openly 1 is lookin 4 trouble, however I feel bad 4 the young lady. A laptop is like Carrington $580 – $850 or more when I go 2 the main branch library with my laptop I would always put it in a non c through bag & use 2 bags 1st put the L.T. in the bag then on the top of it put a another bag pulling it down over the other 1 bh nothin happened 2 me. We shouldn’t have 2 learn from such stories

  • Wee Hour Employee

Many people have off Monday b/c Sunday was x-mas. I was in the Goyishe neighborhood 4am Monday (just now), there are big wild crowds at Bars and Night Clubs. Coming home from the Kreichme they are drunk. I saw a tan Ford Expedition almost lose control of his humongous SUV.

  • HOPE YOU CATCH HIM!

We are still in golus- no matter how comfortable we are.
We have to be vigilant in not showing our possesions, both outside and in the house in regards to cleaners working in our homes.

  • jeniffer appleman

If you flaunt your valueables you are asking for trouble…everyone feels bad for the girl…but the bottom line is you ALL know tha times we are living in…and if you wished someone should get mugged becausese they stated the obvious you are evil!

  • Thank you bochur for helping

Thank you bochur who went to her defense!! That was very kind of you to put yourself in a dangerous situation to help someone!! I hope you’re ok!!

  • start now!!

#21 has the best suggestion. Surely the community can find a lady to teach it? Is it so far-fetched? I’ll sign up my daughter, I may even go along myself.

This is something the CHJCC should do, instead of meseira and taking other people to court & looking for photo ops.

  • #23/copsfrom me

#23 the answer is no!! and the cops are not ment to give up there job is to portect us and not give up!!!

  • victim

one sure way to get police attention real fast is park in a no parking zone or on the wrong side for alternate side and they’ll be there faster than you can say boo with their ticket books open and ready…. and to answer number 23, and what if they catch him? he’ll be back out on the streets in a jiffy. Now if the victim were black and as an extra bonus the father was one of those (corrupt- as they all are) cops you would have the FBI and the CIA etc. looking for him.
Bottom line, we are in golus in this sick world.

  • justme

#7 was being funny shees…I think!
Lesson: Buy an orange never an apple!
Chew gum – gag on gum when confronted!
Foaming at the mouth and spittle works well.

  • Schochat again?

It’s a good thing nobody hurt the poor african american honorable citizen otherwise the DA will launch a special international investigation and track down the ‘rescuer’ globally. Wake up crown heights. You’re the real victims here!!! where’s the outcry from the community? where’s the riots? the revolts? where is the knocking on the DA’s door to find this perp??????

  • HAKERES HA TOV

AS A MOTHER / BUBBIE I WANT TO DEEPLY THANK THE BOCHUR WHO LITERALLY RISKED HIS LIFE TO HELP THIS YOUNG LADY – BH WE WERE SPARED A TRAGEDY – I ALSO WANT TO THANK HIS PARENTS FOR INSTILLING HIM WITH SUCH GOOD VALUES !!! THAT BEING SAID, I FEEL STRONGLY THAT THE REALITIES OF LIFE HERE IN CROWN HEIGHTS REQUIRE THAT WE ALL ( MALE & FEMALE ) CARRY MACE OR PEPPER SPRAY . THIS ANIMAL HAD A GUN !!

  • Crown

the whole, “get fingerprints” theory is great… however, try suggesting that to the 71st precinct. My car was broken into on Crown, and when i told them I didn’t touch the car so if they need fingerprints, etc. they can have at it, their response was “Sir, we are the police, we don’t have time for that type of thing, this is CH.” Yeah, they aren’t the brightest bulbs in the box, nor do they care at all.

  • max

Stage the event one more time, this time with Shomrim waiting in the dark.
And the girl should be a Shomer wearing a Sheitel. Just walk around the same block for a night or two and the guy will pop back up, after all he is nothing but a neighbor. leaving a few blocks down.

  • Shimon L

Then the thing to do, is to form a heimishe CSI squad. How hard would it be to get a few people trained in lifting fingerprints, and then any time there’s a crime that NYPD doesn’t have the will or resources to investigate, to come to them with a set of prints? Hopefully they’re not “too busy” to run those.

  • Just a Thought

There’s any easy way to catch him. Just wait for someone fitting that description who goes to the police and reports that the Jews stole his skateboard.

  • We Need Sting Operations

Sting Operations: Have a dozen girls flaunt their iPads, iPhones, Laptops while being watched under surveillance by a burly group of Shomrim. Let the perps learn what street justice is!

  • ceo

get more surveillance cameras!!! In high crime areas, they should offer it at a major discount on some grant or something. Truth being that it is asking for trouble in this kind of neighborhood by carrying it out in the open. Its not blaming the victim, its just practical thinking.

  • I was FOLLOWED

I WAS FOLLOWED FROM CITI BANK ON UTICA, THE GUY PUNCHED ME IN THE FACE & GRABBED MY TEFFILIN THINKING I TOOK OUT MONEY WHEN REALLY I MADE A DEPOSIT. I HAD NO IDEA I WAS BEING FOLLOWED BY CAR ,THE GIRL WAS A VICTIM AS I WAS WE ALWAYS MUST WATCH OUR BACK AND HASHEM MUST DO THE REST P.S.MY HAT OFF TO THE BUCHER WHO RAN TO HELP

  • more peace and love brothers

    awwwwww
it was so sweet of the bochur to step in
    true ahavas yisroel

  • Victim-s father

First of all, I’d like to rectify the article about the incident:
    1. There were 2 girls walking togheter.
    2. The laptop didn’t belong to my daughter who were hurted (B”H she didn’t break the finger, but hurted very much).
    3. The things happened with her because she went in defense of the girl who the assailant intended to make off with her valuables.
Thanks for the bochur who came in defense of the girls.
The most special thanks to Hashem that avoided a tragedy to happen chas veshalom with all the people involved.

  • Shidduch...maybe?

I don’t know how old this girl is, or how old the bochur is, but it seems hashgacha protis that their journey in life has crossed paths, maybe for a GOOD purpose, like, oh I don’t know…a shidduch??

  • mugging spot

I just heard of another mugging that happened last week on montgomery and albany at 10am. A girl was mugged and her purse was stolen.

  • serel maness

first thing for the girl is to carry a back pack,in such a way that it’s very hard for any one to remove, thanks to the guy who came to her resuce and most important of all is how many times do we got to see how tznius saves us,this is all over nyc,no joke when we wake up and make an effort to increase in tznius and everything else,we’ll bring the redemption

  • LapTop was new still in the bag/box

    when i bought mine
i actually thought about this very issue
if i buy it from the store
bring it home on the subway
the box makes it glaringly obvious that i am carrying a new computer in my hands worth at least $2,000
    so, i thought
better to buy it online and it will be delivered to my door.
    yup,
was a good decision i see.

look people we live in CH Brooklyn.
you have to know your hood
you dont carry valuables obviously while walking around
    period

    Gd forbid it happens
yes, she should have known better
    but it happened
so one doesn’t have to say “i told you so”

  • Esty B

#53-That would be an even happier ending. :) Still, xonsidering the girl was brave enough to yell and the bochur was brave enough to help, it turned out ok B’H.

  • mugging spot

I just heard of another mugging that happened last week on montgomery and albany at 10am. A girl was mugged and her purse was stolen.

  • NYC Cop

Set up a Robbery Task Force within CH comprised up of several bouchrim & girls. all armed with dud electronics. It would be quite simple actually.

  • Rubin Drashinsky (N-HL)

The nice thing about America is u can live anywhere u want.

In Jacksonville Fla today is 75 degrees and we are the largest city in the USA and yet only have 5 CH in a 100 mi radius.

Very little crime in most areas of a refion with 30,000 traditional Jews.

Come on down, the water is fine, Kosher food abundant and Glatt Kosher delvd from Miami weekly.no need for special guards as JSO is here in 5 min..

  • locked and loaded

in other cities and states, it is very easy to legally carry concealed weapons so that you can protect yourself from violent crime and not need to rely on police who are not around when you need them except to mark off the place on the street your body was found.

  • just me have no name

to #63 that guy had a gun and he used it to protect when the bucher jumped on him

  • hashgocho protis

this girl must be special she tried to protect her friend and was brave enough to scream for help!
does anyone know what her name?

  • Jewish dude

Nypd fix tickets for friends and eat donuts all day long. They don’t like to work. All the best to the girl she is the victim in this story.

  • J Nocks

A little tip: Since I have moved to NY, I have started taking Karate/ women’s self defense, It’s an all women’s frum class, with an Amazing black belt teacher. I would be happy to drive anyone who wants Sunday mornings (in lawrence – 5 towns). We practice with rubber knives, wooden guns, choking, etc. It’s a great confidence boost and makes you much more aware of what to do in different situations.
