Could you imagine how much worse it would become to drive up Kingston Avenue? Or how many more tickets would be issued on a regular basis? Well, don’t worry the above picture didn’t happen yet. But it can! Just like Empire Boulevard was revamped almost overnight.

A Kingston Avenue Bike Lane?

Could you imagine how much worse it would become to drive up Kingston Avenue? Or how many more tickets would be issued on a regular basis? Well, don’t worry the above picture didn’t happen yet. But it can! Just like Empire Boulevard was revamped almost overnight.

The city plans to run two new bike lanes right through the heart of Crown Heights, one on Kingston Avenue and another on Brooklyn Avenue. As we have seen the speed in which the city went ahead with their one lane Empire plan, this could become a reality really soon.

Click Here to see the map of bike lanes in NYC. The map includes both existing lanes and future planned lanes.

How can we protest? By attending and becoming part of the Community Board 9 which includes Crown Heights. For more information visit their website: communitybrd9bklyn.org

  • david - Take a lesson from Williamsburg

I believe in Williamsburg they successfully fought having bike lanes.

For years Crown Heights should have learned from their “Activism” in defending our neighborhood!!

You will have all kinds of Tznius issues with teens-30 something Goyiim hauling through Crown Heights FAST on bicycles. It will also be dangerous for mothers with strollers.

  • do we get a say in any of this?????

awesome. as if it weren’t enough for the annoying meter-maids, and ticket givers, they have more to do now.

  • mg

i dont know how they made that picture, but kingston is nowhere near that smooth and pot-hole free.

Maybe a resurfacing is also in order.

  • Avrohom Yitzchok

The bike lane on Empire is great. With no more cars double parked in the lanes, there is no need to weave in and out of traffic, endidng the stop-start nightmare that is driving in Crown Heights. It flows smoother and quicker with one lane.

I hope they do this to Kingston as soon as possible. It will vastly improve the flow of traffic on that busy street.

Don’t want tickets? Don’t break the law.

  • concerned

how about how many accidents could chas v’sholom happen due to a careless driver?

  • Wanda Ring

Why Kingston? Kingston is a very busy commercial (short term) parking and loading area. This creates an unnecessary danger for both bicyclists and drivers. Albany or Schnectady gives the bikers the same route with a safer ride for all.

  • a biker

yey now we can Bike down Kingston Ave!!!!
we need bike lanes but is does not have to be on kingson it can be on Brooklyn only that would be fine, start loosing wight all you fat a– car owners

  • more delays

it already as it is takes 10-15 minutes to get up to eastern pkwy, this will just be hell.

The people making these decisions don’t even live here, they don’t know nor do they care about what goes and will happen, this is unfair.

  • dg

My husband bikes, I think this is great!
You don’t want tickets, watch where you go…
not everything has to be protested, not everything is bad,
different, yes, will we need to adjust ? absolutely,
but this might just be a good change.
    I will not protest.

  • we want it!

NOOOOO WE WANT THE BIKE LANE!!! WE NEED IT! just becuse drivers might have to be carefull not to kill someone ch”v it dosent mean we dont want it! i LOVE NYC!

  • to DG

When your shopping, and your loaded with bags in middle of of the street, your husband is coming to pick you up.

Do you want him to get a ticket for… you have a few choices.

obstructing traffic (and pissing of a lot of drivers)?

Stopping or driving on a bike lane?

or will he meet you at the corner, he will have to turn into a side street, makeing you walk with all those bags. and yes go all the way around bc you still have more shopping to do up the ave?
and what happens when the tucks double park on the street???

  • im a biker 2 but please... come on

make the bike lane on another ave, why kingston

plus once you have the connecting ave from EP to Empire all bikers from all communities and types dressed or undressed start parading through your neighborhood.

  • No bike lane

on empire it did good for taffic.
NO ONE uses the bike lane.
    (aound 5 bikes a day)
if people would use the bike lane – there would aleady have been alot of fatal accidents.

Kingston has no need for a bike lane.

  • BIG DANGER

why should our kids be driving bikes on a busy car street???

imagine how many people will be hurt.

how many tickets will be issued.
I keep the law and still get so many parking tickets.
    who has money?

  • to AVRAM YITZCHOK

“Don’t want tickets? Don’t break the law”

every time YOU cross the street not in a crosswalk or without you light – YOUR BREAKING THE LAW!!

do YOU want a ticket every time???

  • young driver

before you make a bike lane on kingston ave.
we need to ban all Bochurim from dirving in Crown Heights.

  • this is cool

I think this a great idea, now i could bike without thinking to get killed by a car even though the traffic will be very hard. And on Friday when everybody needs Kingston, it will be very hard. But look on the good side at least parents do not need to worry about there kids getting hit by a car.You know you can’t always look on the bad side that there will a mess because of a bike lane.but who am i to talk about this i am only a bachur of 16 so do what you people think is wright but remember we guys can not ride on the side walk so this is a great idea for guys like us.

  • me

Like OBAMA said: “yes we can” (have a bike lane)
or “we need change” in Kingston“
or you could always say we need the ”change“ for something else”.

  • Yetzer Tov

Both bikers and drivers should be more careful. On another site, someone was saying that bikers are the scourge of the city. If so, then how many articles are there about bikers running into someone and hurting/killing them compared to car drivers?

As for tznius issues, if you teach your children well and stay involved in their life, then why do you worry? Sometimes, people’s shock/thoughts are far more un-Tznius than the things they see.

  • BUnch of babies

    DONT BRAKE THE LAW BLABLABLA

    GAGAGOOGOO

its not about breaking the law its about FACTS

    You can not obstruct traffic
you can not drive park stop on a bike lane
you can NEVER find parking on kingston, especially when you need it.

NO ONE IS LOOKING TO BREAK THE LAW

A Normal person who was picking up his disables wife in his car double parked on a bike lane had the tivcking agent block him in then write the ticket….

WHAT WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO.

You know this whole thing is like one big game

you all can say DONT BREAK THE LAW

TILL YOU GET IN A CAR and try making any tiype of pick up…

  • Nice avrohom

    good job on the photoshopping

look at the bike lane size
the parked car is literally hugging the sidewalk but still can not fit

from the size ratio of the biker there the lane is vary accurately put.

then look at the car driving down the road alos very close to the bike lane, and look at the space on the oposit side for parking… its gona be a tight fit.

  • I thought Goldstein was on our side

If you go to the community board blog, you will see that our “own” Yaakov Goldstein was a big (and very quiet – as far as notifying the community) supporter of the crazy reorganizing of Empire Blvd. One can only wonder at HIS agenda. Funny that no one knew what was about to happen to us.

As a parent, driver, etc. I must say that all of these cyclists, even in a bike lane are at risk and cause congestion and aggravation, not calming.

And how does a bike lane and a bus lane on the same street work safely???? Wouldn’t they be in serious and dangerous conflict????

These so called calming plans are poorly thought out and even more poorly implemented.

Are other city agencies made aware of these changes and their ramifications. Do they care???? Case in point: one morning during rush hour, shortly after the “calming plan” was started, the east bound traffic on Empire from Albany to Kingston was backed up completely to Kingston because the sanitation department was collecting garbage from the Shalom center and the truck completely blocked Albany Avenue. This meant that all of the traffic going down Albany was brought to a standstill. And the cars that wanted to turn from the now single lane on Empire couldn’t turn down Albany. So traffic on Empire was halted. What happened? The East bound traffic drove on the turning lane and onto the west bound lane in order to go around the traffic that was backed up from Albany.

    Calming???
    Safer???
Doesn’t look like it to me.

Let’s all turn out for the next Community Board meeting on Tuesday, September 22 and let them know that Kingson and Brooklyn Avenues are not for sale or personal glorification.

  • baaaaad idea

Putting a bike lane on a shopping avenue has got to be one of the dumber ideas of the century. If people are biking for exercise, they should be on a main thoroughfare where they will not have to stop for every third car pulling in or out or loading with an open door. I can just see the driver side doors opening and bikers flying off their bikes and going splat under the wheels of an oncoming bus. Seems like some of those city planners have the IQ of a ping pong ball.

  • Yossel

    B”H

I have mixed feelings…I think more people in the ‘hood should walk and ride bikes…it’s good exercise, will lighten the already congested streets, and help pollution.

ON the other hand, riding a bike in this neighborhood means taking your life in your hands till you get to E.P.

And who are the biggest offenders blocking the bike lanes?
THE CITY!!! Buses, police cars, and City vehicles are constantly blocking bike lanes throughout the borough. City tow trucks drive with abandon. ANd while we’re on the subject, yeshiva school bus drivers think they’re driving a hot rod…roaring down the street to make a light, then slamming on the brakes to pick up a kid…how are cyclists supposed to ride safely?

  • Conserned Resident

I don’t think this is a bad idea, but I do think there should be some sort of public hearing, so we, the people who live, (drive and ride) on Kingston and Brooklyn Ave. should be able to give some input. After all, our streets belong to us; not Mayor Bloomberg or the DOT.
But of course the government knows best. (Did they forget that they are out of money? who is paying for the paint and the painters? ….our children and grandchildren’s future are being mortgaged by Mayor Bloomberg and the rest of his cronies in city government, and we are just going to re-elect him like a bunch of suckers.)

  • Michoel

My great aunt is a biker and I think that this is good for the neighborhood. I would join as well but between spending time with the aninklach and my hip problem I don’t see it in the near future.

    Moshiach now!

  • btw

if you wanna make the photoshop job realistic, then photoshop a cop giving a ticket to a guy who’s double parked while he’s waiting for parking.

  • SD

The traffic congestion on Kingston Ave. is at a peak already. On Fridays and other busy times it has become a time consuming effort just to get thru the avenue , let alone to try to shop. The goal of any planning agency should be to effectuate the flow of traffic, and prevent any type of gridlock. This planned bike-lane, and the ludicrous new setup on Empire Blvd. defies logic. All these new traffic routes set up by the city have only contributed to more congestion , more air pollution caused by standing traffic, and cause needless delays .Biking is fine ,but there are enough designated and safe areas, such as Prospect Park where one can bike in a safe manner. The planners of the past had great foresight in converting most streets to one way traffic. Let todays planners not take a step backward by instituting steps that are a hinderance to the flow of traffic.

  • binyomin

i think the empire work has proven to be good for us, yes the guys and gals driving fast have had to slow down, so whats wrong with that

  • nice

Maybe we can stop eating potato kugel and get on our bikes! Or maybe we can start eating potato kugel and bur it off on the bike. either way there is no downside.

  • I am pro!

This is great. In fact, I requested it by calling 311. This is fantastic news because currently bike riding on Kingston Ave can be disasterous as drivers are not curtious nor careful of bike riders. Thanks to the city for finaly getting this done.

  • Partipant in Community Board Meetings

I believe this was voted on quite on few months ago at Community Board 9.
Call and check it out and ask when the plan will be implemented.

As you see, it is very important to go to these these meetings; they affect serious quality of life issues.

  • me myself and i

Can every one stop compaing kingston to empire… the stores on empire have parking… or should i say store.

and to BTW no photoshopping needed it happans too often.

  • Mush

    I think it’s a bittersweet idea.
We should NOT oppose it even though we probably will get more tickets and there will be delays. WHY?
Cuz there are ppl out there who bike, and it’s only fair that they should get their lane for transportation just like cars do!
