Chanukah Spirit Brings Comfort to Site of Terror Attack

The vice president of the Rabbinical Council of New South Wales, Australia, Rabbi Eli Feldman, along with his wife Rebbetzin Elka Feldman, led a group of young adults in distributing hundreds of Latkes and doughnuts in Martin Place, Sydney.

Days after the horrific terrorist attack that occurred there, Martin Place is thronged with people from all walks of life, placing flowers and paying their respects.

The Chabad movement has erected a Giant (10 meter tall) Chanukah Menorah at Martin Place, in the very same place it has stood annually for the last thirty years.

This year, the following message has been prominently displayed:

“The Jewish community of Australia expresses our deepest sympathy for the families of the Martin Place tragedy. May the Lights of the festival of Chanukah bring comfort and warmth to our nation”

The young adults took a group photo at the Menorah and then proceeded to distribute hundreds of the traditional Chanukah delicacies of Latkes and jelly doughnuts to security officials, workers and pedestrians.

People from all walks of life, including Jews, Christians and Muslims, were delighted to partake of the holiday treats.

It was a special moment for so many people who shared the Chanukah spirit and were encouraged by its message that our shared humanity and the light of goodness will always prevail.
