British Lord at Campus Menorah Lighting

Approximately 50 students and staff gathered on the Queens Lawn Terrace of Imperial College’s South Kensington campus to light the Menorah with Professor Lord Robert Winston. Lord Winston is one of the most famous British professors, medical doctor, scientist, television presenter, and also a politician who sits on the Labour Party benches in the House of Lords.

Lord Winston had rushed straight from a vote in the House of Lords to light the Menorah. He spoke about the significance of Chanukah and mentioned an ancient Talmudic debate between Rav and Shmuel regarding the lighting of the Menorah’s candles from one another.

The lighting had been organized by Chabad on Campus in South Kensington’s director Rabbi Mendy Loewenthal. The Chabad had also organized a menorah lighting outside the Gloucester Road underground station, which saw over 100 people over Chanukah attend it’s lightings, and a Menorah in tunnel of the South Kensington underground which is passed by thousands of people on a daily basis who visit the many museums in the area.

The Menorah was also featured last year in the Imperial College staff newspaper.

“This is a positive event” said Rabbi Mendy Loewenthal, director of Chabad of South Kensington “people are happy to support the Menorah’s message of freedom for all people and we like to promote it”.
