From Sniper to Spirit: Jewish Pride Shines Across Fort Myers Sky

by Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz – Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida

Under the warm Florida sun and open skies, Jewish pride came alive in a powerful and uplifting way at this year’s Jewish Heritage Day, hosted by the Jewish Federation of Lee & Charlotte Counties. Guided by the passionate leadership of Debbie Sanford, together with her dedicated assistant Amy, the event beautifully blended community, culture, and tradition in a way that left a lasting impression on all who attended.

The vibrant outdoor gathering was further elevated by the devoted efforts of Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz and Shani Minkowicz, Shluchim of Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida. Their presence brought authentic Jewish warmth and hands-on mitzvah opportunities to the heart of the event.

Attendees were treated to a full Glatt Kosher culinary experience, featuring mouthwatering falafel, sizzling burgers, shawarma, fresh salads, and crispy French fries—bringing both flavor and tradition together in every bite.

Adding a deeply meaningful dimension, Shani Minkowicz shared the mitzvah of Neshek, distributing Shabbat candles to women and encouraging the light of Jewish homes to shine even brighter. At the same time, Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz inspired over 50 Jewish men to don Tefillin. For many, it was a moment decades in the making—some shared that the last time they had put on Tefillin was at the Kotel in Jerusalem. Emotions ran high as reconnecting souls embraced a timeless tradition.

Yet, the most unforgettable moment came from above.

As the event was under the watchful eye of local law enforcement, a sheriff’s sniper stationed atop a nearby building was identified as Jewish. Without hesitation, Rabbi Minkowicz reached out with a simple but profound invitation: “Would you like to put on Tefillin?”

The response was immediate and heartfelt—yes.

In a scene that captured the essence of Jewish unity and pride, the sniper descended, wrapped Tefillin, and was soon joined by his fellow officers. What followed was a spontaneous and powerful group moment, as they gathered together for a picture—law enforcement standing tall not only in their duty to protect, but in their shared Jewish identity.

It was a moment that transcended expectations. A moment of connection. A moment of pride.

From the ground to the rooftops, Jewish Heritage Day in Fort Myers proved that no matter where a Jew stands—on the street, at the festival, or even atop a building—the call of tradition reaches the soul.

And when it does, the response can be nothing short of extraordinary.
