Purim Under Fire: Kyiv’s Chief Rabbi Stranded in Israel Due to War, Celebrates with Community from Afar

Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Jewish community of Kyiv, “Beit Menachem” JCC, held its central Purim celebration last night with the participation of hundreds of community members. Several Megillah readings took place throughout the evening, along with a festive gathering attended by public figures and official representatives.

Among the hundreds of celebrants were the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, General Kyrylo Budanov; the Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, who is a member of the Jewish community; and the head of Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael (KKL-JNF) in Ukraine. Community officials noted that holding such a large-scale event during a sensitive security period sends a powerful message of continuity and communal resilience.

Kyiv’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, who had made a brief visit to Israel to strengthen members of the community currently there, was forced to remain in the country following the launch of Operation “Roaring Lion” and the closure of Ukrainian airspace. He participated in the main event remotely via Zoom, offering his blessings and addressing the complex situation.

In parallel with the Purim events in Kyiv, the city’s Jewish community distributed mishloach manot packages and gifts to the needy to Jews throughout Ukraine. Special Purim care packages were also sent to Jewish soldiers serving in the Ukrainian army.

“Even in a time of uncertainty, the Jewish community of Kyiv continues to act, to gather, and to strengthen one another,” said Kyiv’s Chief Rabbi and Chabad emissary to the city, Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch. “This year, Purim carries a special meaning of mutual responsibility and care for every Jew, including the soldiers on the front lines. We pray for the safety of the Jews of Ukraine and Israel, and for miracles as in those days, at this time.”
