Mayor of Jūrmala Joins Chabad Chanukah Celebration: “Together, We’ll Make the City Even More Beautiful”

A central Chanukah menorah lighting took place in the heart of Jūrmala’s main pedestrian street, drawing over 100 participants from the local Jewish community and beyond. The event was filled with warmth, light, and joy.

Just half an hour before the event began, Rabbi Mendy Zilberstrom, Chabad’s emissary to Jūrmala, received an unexpected phone call from the city’s mayor, who announced his intention to attend the celebration in person—and bring a gift.

The mayor addressed the crowd with heartfelt words, expressing gratitude for Chabad’s work in the city. Twice quoting the Lubavitcher Rebbe, he said: “Our hearts are open to you. As the Rebbe taught—darkness is overcome with light. Together with you, we will make Jūrmala a better and more beautiful place.”

Rabbi Zilberstrom led the menorah lighting ceremony, followed by a special video presentation of the Rebbe discussing the meaning of Chanukah.

Also in attendance were Rabbi Shneor Kot, the Rebbe’s emissary in Riga, and Rabbi Shalom Kaplan of the “Beit Yisrael” synagogue, along with other notable guests.
