Stamford Hill Community Celebrates Public Menorah Lighting

Despite heavy rain throughout the day, the local community came together for a joyous public menorah lighting organized by Lubavitch Stamford Hill and the Lubavitch Children’s Centre, under the leadership of Rabbi Sholem Ber and Devorah Leah Sudak, and Rabbi Mendel and Miri Sudak. The rain cleared just before 6:00 pm, allowing the festivities to go ahead as planned.

The event drew hundreds of local families and community members, along with representatives from the local council and Stamford Hill leadership. Rabbi Hershy Vogel, Rabbi of Ealing and cousin of Eli Schlanger hy”d addressed the crowd with encouraging and inspirational words.

A special moment of the evening was honoring Mr. Rabin, who was invited to light the menorah in recognition of his many years of service in the Lubavitch Lending Library. The celebration also marked the 1,000,000th book loaned since the Lubavitch Lending Library moved into the Lubavitch Children’s Centre in 2010, a translated Tanya, a significant milestone for the library.

Entertainment included performances by singers Yoni Shlomo and Yishai Lapidus, with music by Shaya Austerlitz, as well as a spectacular fire show. Free doughnuts and glow bands were distributed to children, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The community proceeded with the event despite recent global incidents, including the tragic attack last Sunday in Sydney, Australia, at a Chabad menorah lighting organized by Rabbi Eli Schlanger hy”d who was murdered during the event. Extra security measures were coordinated with the police, CST, and Shomrim to ensure a safe and joyful evening.

Reflecting the spirit of Chanukah, the event emphasized that, despite challenges and adversity, we will continue bringing light into the world, celebrating tradition, learning, and community. The public menorah lighting brought Stamford Hill together in a festive, safe, and inspiring way.
