A Chanukah Photo To Help Save The Kingsbrook Shul
by CrownHeights.info
The Kingsbrook Shul, a 96 year old congregation that until 2020 was located on the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center Campus, is in peril, and a community photo is being arranged to help save it.
“The Community’s presence is requested for a community photo at 8:15 pm on 12/31 at the corner of Rutland & E 49th to help save the 96 yr old Kingsbrook Shul from being sold to pay for Brookdale & Interfaith Hospitals’ financial failures,” Jay Sorid, an activist wrote on social media.
The fight for the Kingsbrook Shul began during the COVID pandemic after the congregation was locked out of the premises. Since then, the fate of the shul has gone down with the hospital itself, which has been shuttered in a state sponsored merger of two other Brooklyn Hospitals, Brookdale and Interfaith.
With the closure of the hospital, plans for a massive affordable and assisted living project have taken a step forward, with the hopes for the future for the shul becoming murky.
On the record requests for information regarding the Shul was responded with promises to keep the Shul open throughout construction and following completion of the future affordable housing project. Since 2020 though, the Shul has remained closed and the powers that have taken over the hospital have refused to reopen it.
