Oholei Torah Honors 77th Precinct Officers

At a recent event, the Educational Institute Oholei Torah honored their local 77th Precinct for the ongoing assistance and friendship. Community Affairs officer Tania Salters accepted the award and a US Congressional Citation signed by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.  Mr. Charles Jackson, District Representative for Congresswoman Clarke, came specially to make the presentation.

Reb Eli Slavin, community liaison for the congresswoman, introduced Mr. Jackson.

Rabbi Yossi Bryski, Director of the OTEG (Oholei Torah Eight Grade) program, praised Ms. Salters for her constant readiness to help, not only in the security and safety issues, but also for many school events, such as the Sukkos amusement carnival and the school’s massive group picture, with logistic assistants from the local police.

Also in attendance were Seargent Verga, Police Officers Thompson, McCall, Thompson and Esteves – all from the 77th Precinct. Present on behalf of Oholei Torah was Rabbi Sholom Goldstein, Principal of the Mechina Division, Rabbi Nosson Blumes, on behalf of the school administration, and Rabbi Veli Karp, a teacher and coordinator of many school-wide and camp projects.

Rabbi Hershel Lustig, Dean, spoke of the holiday of Purim, and described Ms. Salters as Oholei Torah’s Queen Esther, always ready to assist and help in the higher offices of our local police precinct.

Community affairs officer Salters then addressed the students who joined the event, telling them how proud and honored she was to be part of our community. She also thanked the congresswoman for her recognition.

Ms. Clarke was unable to attend, due to the fact that she represented our district in Washington for the Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s address to the U.S. Congress.

What right do they have to drag kids away from learning Torah. Let them honor the police at a dinner.
Other Frum neighborhoods would never do such a thing. How come the teachers do not protest to the administration about the gross Bitul Torah.

  • Amazing!

    Avraham, derech eretz kodmo latorah.
This is a great thing. To give back. You know Avraham there are people out there serving this country that give you that physical freedom to open up your books and study torah. Giving a few moments goes a long way.

Avraham is right, though. The officers do need to be honored, but that could have been accomplished by the adults only, without the need to have the kids sit there (half of whom were probably bored of the whole thing anyway).
