Community Seeks Answers After Shul Vandalism
LAVAL — The future of a Laval synagogue is in doubt after being vandalized last month.
Members of the Young Israel of Chomedey synagogue held a meeting on Thursday night to brainstorm for ways to raise money for major repairs.
The synagogue was flooded in early October when vandals placed a garden hose into a pipe that leads into the building’s oil tank and left it to flood overnight.
About 2,300 litres of oil spilled onto the back lawn, causing contamination and other damage.
Synagogue president Frank Cwilich said at the meeting Thursday that the repairs will be costly.
“So far, we’re looking at $5,500 for the testing of the soil. We’re looking at $3,000 for the removal of water from our tanks. We’re looking at $60,000 so far in bills that look at the removal of contaminates soil from our property,” he said.
Leaders at the synagogue say they have been overwhelmed by the support from those who have worshiped here.
But the damage may be more than the synagogue can handle, as insurance will pay for only half, and the police investigation has so far led nowhere.
The synagogue has been a mainstay of Laval’s Jewish community for more than 50 years.
