Pipe Bursts, Floods CHYE As Record Freezing Temperatures Grips NYC

by CrownHeights.info

With temperatures hitting record lows in New York City, pipes are freezing, and in many cases bursting, in Crown Heights homes and businesses, leaving frozen messes and incredible losses.

The CHYE location on Empire Blvd in Crown Heights became the most recent victim this morning when a pipe burst in their first-floor storefront, flooding the entire floor and spilling outside. Many reports of burst pipes have flowed in from homeowners across Crown Heights whose basements hit below freezing temperatures and triggered disaster.

NYC has been gripped by an exceptionally cold air freeze, with temperatures plummeting into the single digits with wind chills far below zero over the past several days.

Over this weekend, forecasts showed lows near 3°F–8°F with highs barely climbing into the teens, numbers that are among the coldest in years for early February.

This cold snap has been part of one of the longest stretches of below-freezing temperatures in decades, according to CBS News, approaching a record last set in 1961.

The cold streak is forecast to end this week, rising into the 20s early in the week with highs rising above freezing mid-week.
