Zohran Mamdani’s Rise Sparks Alarm as Crown Heights Groups Urge Unity Ahead of Mayoral Primary

The surging candidacy of Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic mayoral primary has sparked deep concern across the Crown Heights Jewish community. Currently polling in second place, Mamdani has drawn widespread criticism for his radical positions on Israel, including public support for the BDS movement, refusal to affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, and participation in numerous anti-Israel protests.

On October 8, 2023, Mamdani criticized Israel—but not Hamas—following the terror attacks, and has since stated he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York.

Former Council Member David Greenfield highlighted the danger in a tweet responding to a post from a DSA group:

“Zohran Mamdani’s political party called for the terrorist who murdered two innocent Israeli embassy workers to be freed.

Yes, freed.

As Mayor, Zohran would oversee the NYPD.

Zohran has already said that he would arrest Israeli officials in NY.

Would he free a murderer too?”

In response to Mamdani’s growing influence, Crown Heights United and Crown Heights PAC—the political groups in the neighborhood—have announced a joint slate of endorsements, marking a rare show of unity. The groups, who previously collaborated briefly in 2021, say the stakes are simply too high to remain divided.

“We are facing unprecedented challenges to our safety as Jews and New Yorkers, and attacks on our yeshivas and community. We need everyone to be registered and vote, and this is why we felt Crown Heights has to unite and vote in strong numbers,” said Shmuel Rosenstein, chairman of the Crown Heights PAC, in a statement.

“I am disgusted by how well Mamdani is doing. Ten years ago, being associated with someone as radical and anti-Israel as Mamdani would have been disqualifying. Today, he is surging in the polls. We need to send a message back by voting,” said Yaacov Behrman, one of the founding members of Crown Heights United.

Mayor Eric Adams has announced he will not participate in the Democratic primary, leaving the race open and intensely competitive. In addition to the mayoral race, voters will weigh in on other key contests including the New York City Comptroller, Brooklyn Borough President, and several City Council seats.

The Crown Heights endorsements are expected to be announced after Shavuos, as leaders continue to meet with candidates.

If you aren’t registered to vote, there is still time. The deadline to register is June 14. You can register at AnashVote.com.

This article makes it sound if all of Crown Heights endorses someone he will win.
What is needed is for all the Jewish communities of the City to endorse the same candidate than there is a good chance that candidate will win

    • 100%

This most certainly applies to every Jewish community in NYC. There must be achdus, concerted cooperation and coordination within all Jewish communities in this city. And then with Hashem’s mercy and the Rebbe’s Bracha all will be well. Bezras Hashem!

The governors race in Louisiana once starred a career-long corrupt player on the Democrat side and a Klansman-neo Nazi on the Republicans. This race is shaping up much the same way.
