Inauguration Ceremony Held For Crown Heights Assemblymember Brian Cunningham

Hundreds of people flooded the Brooklyn Children’s Museum Thursday evening to celebrate the inauguration of Brian Cunningham to the New York State Assembly as the representative for Crown Heights.

“Everyday I am grateful to have the honor of serving this special community,” the newly inaugurated Assemblyman said. “Distinct among others for its remarkable diversity — where else can one find oxtails and cholent within a 5 minute radius? These are special Neighborhoods which brought us many firsts—- the first black woman in congress, Shirley Chisholm, The first black man to lead the democratic party, Crown Heights very own Hakeem Jeffries- Chuck Schumer who is the highest ranking Jewish man to hold office in American history.”

The politically star studded event included speeches from Jewish Activist Rabbi Yaacov Behrman and entertainment from a local Chazzon Shlomie Rabin who regaled the attendees with a rendition of G-d Bless America and an English version of Oseh Shalom.

During his address, Rabbi Behrman spoke of the special unity displayed during this past election between the Jewish and black communities, ensuring Cunningham’s election win.

“One of the special aspects of this election was how the Jewish community and black communities of Crown Heights worked together to ensure Brian’s victory,” Rabbi Behrman said. “This unity is significant given our shared history and deep roots in Crown Heights.”

The event drew a well above average crowd for an New York Assembly inaugural event, including notable people such Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, NYS Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Ganzalez, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

“The community really appreciates how Brian unites both the Jewish and black communities,” a local activist told CrownHeights.info. “There must have been nearly 700 people there, and that’s not normally what you see at a event surrounding the New York State Assembly.”

Council Members Chi Osse, Rita Joseph, and Farah Louis were also in attendence, as well as State Senators Roxanne Persaud, Leroy Comrie, and John Liu.

Congressional Representatives included representative for New York’s 9th Congressional District Yvette Clarke as well as others joining via live feed.

Assemble members at the event were Carl Heastie, Marcela Mitayes, Eddie Gibbs, Monique Waterman, Jessica González-Rojas, David Weprin, Grace Lee, Alex Bores, Nikki Lucas, Manny De Los Santos, George Alvares, Khalil Anderson, Charles Fall, Katalina Cruz, Alicia Hyndman, and Rodneyse Bichotte Hermely.
