When Yoel Kellner jumped out of his truck and took a stand for a fellow Jew, he wasn’t thinking about being a hero, but social media quickly made him one.

His heroic actions to defend another Jew being assaulted on a Brooklyn street went viral, hitting mainstream news channels and spreading on social media chats.

Sunday night, Kellner was recognized by Guardian Self Defense, a local self defense program geared to preparing the Jewish community, with an award gift of $500.

“He is truly an example of the type of values we work to instill in our students and community: If you see something, DO something,” Guardian Self Defense wrote in a Facebook post.

“With antisemitic attacks at the highest level in decades, it is incumbent upon ourselves to learn how to defend ourselves and come to the help of one another.”
