Temporary Day-Hab Opens In Crown Heights To Fill Community Need

by CrownHeights.info

Crown Heights Hatzalah has done it again. Having paired with individuals involved in the wellbeing of the community and local physicians, they have developed a day-hab facility where patients will be able to get all the therapy they need and yet live at home. Families will be connected again.

After throwing themselves into the enormous task of keeping the Crown Heights community safe and responding to calls for help throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, one job remains to be done, and Hatzalah is ready to go the distance.

With each announcement that another Crown Heights resident has returned home, comes relieved families, smiling faces, and another hurdle to cross.

Many of those returning home have been sick for weeks, bedridden, and in some cases on critical ventilator support. Some need comprehensive rehabilitation so that they may walk, climb stairs, strengthen their bodies, and face the terrible experiences that they endured.

To step up to the task, Dr. Rosen teamed up with Crown Heights Hatzalah and licensed therapists in the field of rehabilitation to create a temporary rehab center in Crown Heights.

“We are expecting between 15 and 50 people to need our services,” Crown Heights Hatzalah coordinator Yingy Bistritzky told CrownHeights.info. “We are hoping that the facility will no longer be needed in around five weeks.”

“All Hatzallah members will be involved in one way or other, whether transitioning patients between the home and the center, attending to patients’ needs by moving them from one form of therapy to another or by running errands for the patients and facility.”

The main lunchroom of Lubavitcher Yeshiva on Crown Street went from holding tables and chairs to housing a full array of exercise and rehabilitation equipment. A mock apartment, complete with a small kitchen, bed, bath, and bathroom, along with portable stairs and a medical exam area, transformed the room into a comprehensive, all in one rehab facility.

“Our mission at Crown Heights Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center is to help people recover physically and emotionally from the toll of COVID-19.” wrote co-founder Golan Ben-Oni. “By creating a safe, comfortable, and healing environment staffed by highly skilled and compassionate therapists, CH Comprehensive Rehab Center is the place where personal transformation occurs.”

Volunteers and specialists, including Doctors, Physical and Occupational therapists, will work beside speech, respiratory and psychiatric specialists to quickly help those in need get back on their feet.

The rehab center will be open Sunday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

For transportation to and from the rehab, Crown Heights Hatzalah will be assisting those unable to make the trip on their own.

The facility will be open to all those people in critical need of therapy while recovering from COVID-19.
