Video: “Yes, My Parents Did Brainwash Me”

“My parents brainwashed me? Yeah my father twisted my infant brain in such a horrific way that he made me value my integrity; and to make matters even worse he led by example,” declares Ethan Metzger at the  first Annual Bronx Youth Poetry Slam at the Kingsbridge Library in the Bronx, NY.

You can’t bash Modern Orthodox and then applaud when a kid that goes to college and obviously had a supportive upbringing (sorry, but that’s not the case for most of us) and aplaude him for being taught basics that (sorry again) mosy of us were not taught.

Really, we were taught to respect others beliefs? Do the best we can? And all the other wonderful things he says there. Yes HE had that experience, but sadly most of us didn’t.

    Just food for thought.

although i am not a religious jew and consider myself secular, i am very proud of what this young man had to say, i think the biggest lesson i learned was about blind hatred and how badly it can infect a society. i learned this from my dad who lived through the pogroms in russia and who lost many family members as a result. to this day, i do not judge anyone on their religious beliefs (ok, maybe not true re scientology), or the color of their skin or their country of origin, or by their wealth or lack thereof. i think this young man was lucky to be born into a family with morals and values, and i’m sure ethics too. it will serve him well in life, and i just know he will do well with whatever he chooses to do for a living, and because he’s already a mensch. it’s people like him who will change the ugly world we live in today,

My friend of 40 years or so, an orthodox Jew sent
me this and I enjoyed it partly because I was also
brainwashed at home and in parochial school not only in words but in actions. Parents respectful of
all and boot camp in school provided discipline
and resilience but very importantly no
    bullying of others.
