Weekly Living Torah: Our Friend, the Grand Rebbe

New York City councilman James E. Davis, may he rest in peace, founded the non-profit organization, Love Yourself, Stop the Violence, dedicated to halting inner city gun crime and drug abuse. His brother, Geoffrey Davis, retells the original inspiration behind his brother’s life work.

Being that he’s a politician, you can never know if he’s lying or not but my instinct is that it’s true. 100% as told, perhaps not, but he probably portrayed the accurate sentiments and encased it in words based on what he remembers the rebbe would have told him.

You don’t believe the story because you’re silly! Although I am a Jew, contrary to this person, as a child the Rebbe would stop to talk to me as well. I can relate at least a half a dozen conversations I had with the Rebbe as a child of 11 -12 years old.

  • huh?

no way this could have happened… I am glad that they did not publish the rest, which most probably want even more not believable..

My husband had conversations over the years with both Davis brothers, as we live nearby. He first heard the story told by Geoffrey. Geoffrey had nothing to gain by sharing his recollections with my husband. My husband suggested that the archivists interview Geoffrey, who apparently graciously consented.

My problem with the story are the dates & years he refers to.

Since about 1965 the Rebbe did not walk from and to his home during the weekdays only on Shabbos did the Rebbe walk and then with a few Bochrim behind him (except after farbrengens when a much larger crowd followed), so first of all, on Shabbos the Rebbe didn’t carry any money with him C”V, secondly, it would be very far fetched that in the 70′s or early 80′s something like this happened even once, let alone many times and nobody ever heard about this.

I completely believe him. I know the Davis’ for years & always knew this story.
