When the idea of an Aliya float was brought up at a recent farbrengen it was initially met with uncertainty. What do we have to show the world? What is so impressive about us that should be flaunted in front of hundreds of thousands? One proud voice stood out and said “what do you mean? Aliya is the greatest place on earth and let's share our great energy and talents with the whole community”.

Aliya’s Float of Chayus!

When the idea of an Aliya float was brought up at a recent farbrengen it was initially met with uncertainty. What do we have to show the world? What is so impressive about us that should be flaunted in front of hundreds of thousands? One proud voice stood out and said “what do you mean? Aliya is the greatest place on earth and let’s share our great energy and talents with the whole community”.

All of the sudden the stamina began to build. The excitement in the room could be felt as we made the decision.

Shevach Tamir, who recently started a band made up of talented Aliya alumni Avremy Rosenthal and Moishe Katzen, immediately volunteered to play on the float.

The day arrived. Guys came to spray-paint beautiful signs on Motzoi Shabbos saying “Simach Poretz Geder – joy breaks all boundaries”. Sunday, Aliya members actually woke up early and prepared the float as well as spray-painted Aliya t-shirts.

The time had come, the music was playing, spirits were high, as the truck loaded with music equipment and excited Aliya members pulled away from Aliya towards the parade. We knew we were on a winning run when even the non-Jews on the street we stopping their cars, honking and cheering as we drove up New York Avenue.

Then we were there, singing and dancing in front of a sea of men, women and children that seemed to stretch forever. The most exhilarating part of it all was watching the faces of those we passed, suddenly turn to joy. It was like our joy and energy was spreading across the crowd like wild fire. It was an unbelievable experience.

By the time we reached the end of the parade, everyone on board was totally elated and all shared the same feeling: we had just rocked the parade and it felt so good to give back to the community. Since the parade every, single one of us on board have been showered with praise for the energy we provided.
