One of the Mitzvos of Purim day is the giving of charity to the poor – Matanot Le’evyonim – and tens of collectors gather near 770 where they vie for passerby’s donations. Our photographer happened to be there and captured what a cutthroat business it is!

Devorah
He’s right! Half the collectors are gypies, goyim who pretend and were literally stealing jewish money by the hundreds on Purim., posing with their kids for sympathy!
Toba Leah
TO number 1 – What?? stealing money? I understand that the mitzvah is to give to Jewish poor people, but whoever stands outside and asks for money is in desperate need, and Jewish or not, it’s a mitzvah to give to him…!
londoner
shimon is that you?
Nobody
The halachah on Purim is “kol haposhet yad nosnim lo.” Let’s just hope Hashem overlooks our shortcomings as much as we overlooked theirs and gave generously on Purim.

To #2 Toba Leah
I never saw anything as absurd as your comment: “whoever stands outside and asks for money is in desperate need, and Jewish or not, it’s a mitzvah to give to him”
If a mugger asks for money – it’s a mitzvah to give to him?!
These people are (1) acting fraudulently by holding themselves out as Jewish and therefore defrauding the public; (2) exploiting our religious obligations for personal gain; (3) are not neccessarily destitute or in financial poverty but using an opportunity to make some fast cash.
Suppose they would be black, smelling of alcohol and panhandling for money would you take the same position?! At least in such a scenario there is no fraud of someone holding out to be Jewish!
How about squeegie kids who must also be desperate for money?! At least in such a scenerio they are likely destitude.
Do you know that addicts (alcohol or drugs) are always desperate for money?!
Left-thinking liberalism can only go so far. You have crossed the edge of the cliff of reason, and have fallen off the planet of logic and intellect.
wahooooooo
gooooooooooooo shimon!!!!!!!!!
CHT
That’s not worst, the worst I seen this Purim is that they took a little girl and used her for collecting money. Even the real poor try to avoid using kids for collecting money – but those people are not so desperately poor, trust me, for many in Brighton this is just cynically fishing trip to fish for some extra money.
Milhouse
The gemoro in bovo basro is clear, that money given to a nisht-id, even if he’s genuinely poor, is not tzedokoh, and the donor gets no sechar. Kol shekein for a faker.
ch man
this is why i give to organizations at least i know where the money is going to like Devora Benjamin or rabbi lieder

SHIMON L!!!! i always knew you were an undercover crownheights.info fan!!!!!!1
bizness
These goym think that money is given to the poor (Jewish or not) and yes, for many is a good bizness, they take 1000 box tax free all cash
770
wow
I am from Jersey, and I used to give the matanos to a guy who was going to 770 to distribute to poor people
just wondering
to milhouse, what if the jew who gives the tzedoka doesn’t realize the recipient is a goy? wouidn’t G-d see the intention in the jew’s heart and give him the zechar anyway?
malca b
guess that why i avoid 770 and kingston on purim — i know plenty of yidden – neighbors – who are in need and could use the help –
during the year i try to save up for purim to have the mitzvah of giving to 2 people – this year i was able to do just that, not a $1-2 but a nice amount — bh
and hopefully next year it could be more i will be able to give to those who desparately need –
now – if any of you still want to hape a needy yid for PESACH – let me know and i’ll be glad to share some names of those that need
Maimonides
Are you actually making fun of poor people on this website?!!! Shame on you.
