Last week, the Toronto community held an “Evening of Tribute, Honor and Inspiration” to recognize Rabbi J. Immanuel Schochet and Rebbetzin Jettie Schochet. More than 500 people attended the event held at “the BAYT” to show their gratitude to the couple for their lifetime of work.

The highlight of the evening came as the couple’s son, Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, a frontrunner for the soon-to-be-vacant post of Chief Rabbi of England, spoke on the theme of positive thinking and revealed a wild story of how joy breaks through barriers involving himself, his father and a broken dining room table.

Rabbi Yitzchak presented his parents with a framed piece of the broken table bearing a golden plaque with the engraving “Simcha Poretz Geder.”

To hear the complete story of the Schochet’s broken table, watch the video of Rabbi Yitzchak’s speech — and words from the honoree, his father, Rabbi Immanuel — on Chabad.org’s Jewish.TV

  • Wish I could have been there

Many of us could not afford the $180 dinner fee but would have loved to attended and honor this wonderful couple. A more affordable venue would have brought out hundreds more to honor Rabbi Schochet!

  • INCREDIBLY INSPIRING

THIS is an outstanding speech. I watched it twice. It is very inspiring. I actually will walk into today with a whole different attitude even if my life sucks at the moment. Thank you for posting this.

  • Been there - it was worth it!

I paid the $180 per person. It was worth it. Best $180 I ever spent…now, all I need to figure out how to explain to the Cheder tuition committee how I was able to afford it :)

  • TRACHT GUT

If you cannot afford the $180 then tracht gut – and it would come to you – vet zein gut!

    I hear a song coming on…

  • Pass on the Tracht gut

After spending $180 on the dinner I will tell the Cheder tuition comittee – tracht gut and it will come to you – vet zein gut!

The tuition conittee will tell their teachers after being behind in payment – trach gut and you will get paid.

The teachers will tell VISA and the landlord – we don’t have your money, but tracht gut…

    Everyone, just tracht gut!

  • Constructive critic

He is a good speaker but his opening lines were ridiculous. the MC gave him no compliments other than saying that the apple does not fall far from the tree. His opening that his mother wouldn’t believe the compliments…are completely out of touch with reality! What compliments????

Yitzy, sometimes you need to ad lib to the script!

  • Chassdidm!!

You guys are so caught up with your tuition woes you missed the highlight of the speech IMMANUEL SHOCHET DANCING ON A TABLE!!!!
    That’s a scene I cherish :)

  • NUMBER 6 CRITIC

Number 6 – I was at the dinner. You didn’t hear the whole intro. He was introduced as the next Chief Rabbi of the UK. I think he found that embarrassing. Actually if it was misplaced people wouldn’t have been laughing. It was really quite funny.++
