Flashback: Assassination Attempt on The President

This week a crazed gunman attempted to kill US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords as she stood outside a grocery store in her district.

On March 30, 1981, a crazed gunman named John Hinckley attempt to kill President Ronald Reagan as he exited the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. Two weeks after the assassination attempt, as he commemorated his own 79th birthday, the Rebbe wished the President a full recovery, and thanked the President for designating his birthday as “Education Day, USA.”

He spoke of the shocking nature of the crime, and the root cause of such evil.

  • what-s the real purpose

what’s the real purpose of these articles about Gifford? i wonder because it doesn’t seem to be accurate news and information as much as it is a means of goading people into asking for corrections that in turn moves people into making further responses that ends up being little more than avak lashon hara disguised as a call for absolute din or a little rachamim.

had more attention been paid to the basic facts, then maybe a lot of heated and nasty and corrective comments might not have been expressed, regardless of which position was being upheld.

  • To #2

The same purpose as knowing about any other tragedy. “No punishment comes to the world except for the sake of the Jewish People” (Yevamos 63a) – “so that they do teshuvah” (Rashi there). Especially something like this which is making headlines all over the world! Certainly, then, we should be taking lessons from it.

  • Liberalism is Not the Problem

No intent to be disrespectful, but the premise here is simply false. If there were some connection between the “liberal” education system and these types of killers, assassination attempts would be commonplace. They are not. The fact that these types of events are extremely rare speaks for itself. Blaming the act of one or two crazed lunatics on an education system which produces millions of civilized non-violent people is stretching it at best.

As for the notion that liberal’s raise “wild donkeys”, again, this is completely disconnected from reality. How many of you have been serviced by liberal doctors at your local hospitals? Did you get the impression that these people were raised as animals, free from parental guidance? How in the world did they manage to make it through years of schooling and clinical
practice, devoid of any guidance? More to the point, how many of them are shooting up crowds of innocent people?

The fact remains, that it is in the most liberal countries on earth in which there are the fewest incidences of gun violence. This is not my opinion; a simple Google search will confirm this. In every society there are crazy people who act out their craziness, but to attribute such behavior to the education system without establishing any correlation let alone causation, is specious at best.
