A 55-year old woman was arrested Monday for the alleged assault and abuse of an elderly woman she was hired to care for.

The abuse was discovered after the elderly woman’s family suspected her caretaker of theft. They hired a private investigator and were shocked to discover that their beloved relative – a 72-year-old Holocaust survivor – was severely abused.

The suspect was hired by the woman’s family about six months ago to assist her, since she has great difficulty communicating with her surrounding.

After a few months, the elderly woman’s husband began noticing some money was missing from the house and along with his son, hired private investigator Avi Barnea.

“When I came to the house I noticed clear signs of violence, including a ‘black eye,’ she couldn’t explain,” he told Ynet.

Barnea suggested the husband install surveillance cameras in an attempt to monitor both his wife’s care and the place where he kept his money.

The footage revealed more than the caretaker’s theft – which the husband later valued at some NIS 12,000 (roughly $3,200) – it also showed her systematically hitting, punching and kicking her patient.

The family turned the footage over to the police promptly and the woman was arrested. According to police sources, the suspect denied the allegations at first, but after she was confronted by the footage, she changed her version of the events, saying the elderly woman yelled at her and she lost control.

  • Take precautions with your own

    anyone who has a parent living at home with an aide, would be wise to do their own investigations every so often. If installing a camera is too expensive, stand outside the door and listen in, visit often without warning, put a monitor or phone somewhere and leave it on so you can listen in.
    These people can be truly nice and special, or they couldn’t care less. Even if they are not terribly abusive, often there is screaming at the old person and showing them.
    Take precautions. The elderly can’t advocate for themselves. Even if they are verbal and “with it” they are often too afraid to say anything because they know that they will be the ones to face the music.

    horrific!!!!!!!!!! all too often caretakers abuse their clients we just dont know about it.
    if a child doesnt want to go to a babysitter – look into it! 9 out of 10 times the child has a good reason.

    In this situation, there should be NO DOUBT that you should spend the money on a camera!!! It’s worth every cent to know you have the ability to monitor what’s going on in your home.

    The quality of non-Jewish caretakers and babysitters should NOT be trusted.

    This happened in Israel. There is nothing yet indicating that the caretaker is not Jewish.

    This is not an ethnic issue, rather it’s about the caretaker’s mental stability and values/ethics, of which they are clearly and severely lacking.

    I’ve met Orthodox Jews who have been victims of domestic/parental violence and who also inflict emotional trauma on their own children. Yet, because they are Jewish, they should be better at caretaking? Absolutely not.

    I do agree about installing cameras and I do think EVERY caretaker and babysitter, regardless of ethnicity, must be fully vetted.
