The worlds only Menorah Fire Truck Parade

GAITHERSBURG, MD [CHI] — Rockville Volunteer Fire Department, in conjunction with Chabad of Upper Montgomery County, paraded through Gaithersburg this past Thursday night. With a three foot Menorah perched on the front of Rescue Engine 33, the parade included five Chiefs vehicles a ladder truck and an ambulance, which drove throughout town handing out dreidels and chocolate Chanukah “Gelt”.

The parade definitely lit up the face of David, a special needs child. The parade made an extra stop in front of his home, enabling him to participate in this special event.

At six locations throughout Gaithersburg, crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the fire truck parade, each stop was met with parents and children eager to see the fire trucks.

A large crowd gathered in front of Chabad’s Chanukah Wonderland, a ten day center of holiday activities, where Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett joined the parade and and together with Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, chaplain of the fire department, handed out Chanukah Gelt and dreidles. The parade ended at the Chabad Center on Route 28 where Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett lit the Shamesh and Rabbi Sholom Raichik, Director of Chabad of Upper Montgomery County, lit the nine foot outdoor Menorah and the crowd ate the traditional “Latkes” and Jelly Doughnuts. Over 600 people participated in the parade route making it the biggest parade yet. The parade was arranged in part by Eric Bernard, president of the Fire Dept.and Lenny Chornock, fire chief.
