“How beautiful! How American! That I stand here tonight at Nassau Coliseum lighting up the Menorah publicly and proudly in front of the greatest fans in the world!” announced Rabbi Paltiel to a cheering crowd during the first television break. The Rabbi, — sporting an Islanders jersey boasting “RABBI” and the number 18 on the back — captivated the crowd with his hockey-themed Chanukah message “Chanukah honors a time when a good line-up of a few dedicated men faced-off against an army of prejudice and religious intolerance. Although heavily shorthanded, their miraculous triumph celebrates the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness.”
As the rabbi turned to light the menorah, he concluded, “This is only a warm-up ceremony. When the dreidle drops tomorrow night, be sure to kindle your own menorahs, adding another flame each of the eight nights… Happy Chanukah!”
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory strongly encouraged public displays of Chanukah in order to publicize the miracle that took place and as a symbol of the religious freedom that this wonderful country provides. This unique ceremony was a tribute to this wonderful country which provides each of us the freedom to express our faiths. A celebration for all people of good will, the pre-Chanukah event at the arena demonstrated that we are, indeed, “One Nation Under G-d”.

its beautiful and incredible how far we’ve come! We should only remember that just like Shalom Moshe, the idea is that its amazing to be able to bring other Yidden closer, and not that the game is anything special except an opportunity to reach other Yidden. Moshiach NOW!
