Chabad House for Seniors Taps Into Often Overlooked Resource
MONROE TOWNSHIP NJ — When most people hear of a Chabad House, images of college students, young professional couples with kids or even backpackers traipsing through the mountains of Asia or South American flit through their minds. Senior citizens usually do not appear in such split-second conceptions.
It’s no wonder considering that typically, the older generation attends synagogue only on the recommendation of their children. Not so, however, in the small community of Monroe Township, N.J. There, Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Eliezer and Chanie Zaklikovsky, instead of treating senior citizens as an afterthought, actively cater specifically to the aged set with what one member calls “a very friendly and heimish” shul.
The Zaklikovsky family has been living in Monroe for almost five years. Their Chabad House serves local seniors who reside in 12 restricted housing developments. The average age of the neighbors is 65, but the local energy is anything but tired.
Originally from Detroit, Eliezer Zaklikovsky has extensive experience in outreach work. During his travels across Asia, he led the world’s largest Pesach Seder in Katmandu, Nepal. Chanie Zaklikovsky has a background in education, music performance and child development.
