ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia — A new humanitarian project organized by the Synagogue in Rostov-on-Don has resulted in the distribution of food aid to more than 400 children from the southern Russian cities of Rostov-on-Don, Taganrog, Novocherkassk and Cherkassk.

Each package contains numerous kosher food products, including a two-kilogram chicken, all of which are packaged together with a detailed list of contents and instructions for the food’s preparation.

This latest useful project was made possible through support from the ‘Keren Yedidut le-eladim’ Foundation headed by its Founder and president Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein and the organizational initiative of the Jewish community of Rostov-on-Don and the ‘Chesed Sholom Ber’ Charity Foundation. The main beneficiaries of this project are children from low-income families and families that are in critical need of social assistance. Among these recipients are also a number of orphans, disabled, from single-parent families and families in transition due to the lack of adequate shelter.

This undertaking is a very timely one, especially given the recent hike in prices of a number of key basic food necessities and the fact that winter is quickly approaching. All funds remaining from this project are being put towards the purchase of winter clothing for the most needy amongst these youngsters. Apart from this, of course, all of these youth acknowledge that someone is looking out for them and that all Jews are responsible for one another – a very important lesson to learn early on in life.
