Chabad of WNC Starts the Year on a High Note
ASHEVILLE, NC — In an effort to ensure that every Jewish individual in Western North Carolina has a place to go for the upcoming High Holy Days, Chabad, for the first time, will be holding its Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services at the new Chabad Center, 660 Merrimon Ave.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is a time when the Jewish people take on New Year’s resolutions, improve their ways, and ask God’s blessing for a happy, healthy and sweet New Year. They do so through prayer in the synagogue, blowing the shofar (a ram’s horn to remind them of repent and resolve), and by eating sweet foods such as apple dipped in honey and honey cake, for a sweet new year.
“According to tradition, the doors of heaven are open to all at the onset of the new year,” Rabbi Shaya Susskind, executive director of Chabad WNC. “The least we can do is open our doors as well, to the entire community, regardless of synagogue membership, people’s levels of observances, affiliations and levels of knowledge and background.”
“You may see yourself as unaffiliated, feform, conservative or orthodox. At Chabad, we see you as Jewish. No labels. No differences.”
The services will use The English-Hebrew prayer book, and include song, commentary and sermons. Youth programs and services led by experienced group leaders are also planned. Each service will be followed by a holiday buffet and program.
Services will be on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Sept. 12-14, as well as Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, Sept. 21-22. The Sukkot Celebration, the holiday that follows and concludes the High Holy Days, is open to the community and will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at 660 Merrimon Ave.
