Marking its fifth year anniversary, friends and supporters of Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington joined state and city government dignitaries to celebrate an evening in recognition of the impact the organization has made in the community since its inception.

Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille was presented with the Public Service Award.

Euille presented Rabbi Newman with a proclamation, issued by the Alexandria City Council and the Mayor, proclaiming 105 Days of Education in honor of the 105th birthday anniversary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson.

The proclamation pays tribute to the Rebbe who established more than 3,000 Chabad Lubavitch centers in more the 70 countries.

Joshua and Joseph Nabatkhorian, of J&J Oriental Rug Gallery in Old Town Alexandria, were honored with the Lamplighter Award. Their King Street Gallery is the site of the annual public Menorah lighting, which is attended by the mayor and hundreds of local residents.

Jerome and Bunny Chapman of Alexandria were the guests of honor. Bunny Chapman told about her early childhood in the south, where as a young child she felt it necessary to keep her faith and tradition in a low key tone.

She described how in a short five years, Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington, under the leadership of Rabbi Mordechai and Yehudis Newman, has provided the community with many happy moments, publicly celebrating faith and tradition with pride and great fanfare, with city permits and police escorts.
