Vladivostok’s Jews Celebrate in Spite of Recent Anti-Semitic Incidents

Vladivostok, Russia — Purim, a holiday many residents never heard of until recently, was celebrated in its true spirit in this Far Eastern city.

A group of young people gathered in the city’s synagogue, where they ate, drank, and made merry, all in the spirit of Purim. A megillah reading accompanied by a magnificent multimedia slide show was enjoyed by all.

This celebration comes in the wake of an anti-semitic incident. The swastikas and anti-semitic slurs sprayed on the synagogue’s walls just last Friday have not yet been completely washed off.

Says Rabbi Yisroel Silberstein “It is especially significant that youth, our symbol of the future, gathered here tonight. We have proven once again, that we will not give in to anti-semitism, but rather, increase our work of spreading light and goodness.”

Tomorrow, a large scale celebration is being held in a theater in the center of town.

Indeed, for the Jews of Vladivostok this Purim, to paraphrase the megillah, there will be light, joy, gladness, and goodness will once again prevail over evil.
