100 Celebrate Shabbos with Chabad at Union College

Over 100 Jewish students of all backgrounds and affiliations gathered together for a Shabbos dinner, hosted by Chabad of Union College in Schenectady, New York.

On Friday, Oct. 16, over 100 students gathered together in the College Park Hall ballroom for the fifth annual mega Shabbat dinner, called Shabbat 150.

Hosted by Chabad, Shabbat 150 aimed to unite a diverse group of Jewish students in solidarity with the people of Israel, as students engaged in a variety of Jewish traditions.

The program asked students to reach out and invite their friends as personal guests to experience a traditional Shabbat dinner collectively.

Students from Chabad, Hillel, U for Israel, various Greek organizations and athletic teams hosted student guests.

Chabad President Sara Covelli explained that Shabbat “is a time to set aside all weekly responsibilities, reflect on your week and come together as a community to eat and sing together.”

Rabbi Shmuly Rubin, co-director of Chabad, spoke about Shabbat being a “pause between the notes.”

He said that in “great living,” as in great music, the art may be in the pauses.

Shabbat offers this “pause,” filled with serenity and sanctity from a busy work week.
