Sounds all up and down the musical scale emanated from ram’s horns tooted by about 35 boys and girls on Sunday – a precursor to the Jewish high holy days of Rosh Hashanah.

The children were at a “Shofar factory” at Chabad Lubavitch of SW Florida making a traditional and ancient musical instrument in preparation for the Jewish New Year which begins at sundown Sunday.

“This is what they used to call the people to worship,” said Linda Idelson, who was watching over her granddaughter, Steele, 6, as she sanded the outside of the horn to make it smooth.

“This was started to give children an awareness of our past and to prepare for the high holy days,” Idelson said.

Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz, director of Chabad Lubavitch, said the factory is held on a somewhat annual basis at the 5620 Winkler Road facility.
